Tonight I listened to part of the Giants/Phillies playoff game and thoroughly enjoyed it. For me listening to a baseball game on the radio is the perfect way to engage with baseball. There's something about the whole soundscape that's profoundly comforting. Maybe "comforting" is not what most people want out of a sports experience, but...

I imprinted on baseball when I was 6 (almost 7) and the Detroit Tigers won the 1968 World Series. The kids were allowed to bring radios to school to listen to the game. I also used to stand in front of the TV in the living room and imitate the pitchers.

Yeah, I remember the Series in the '60s, too, and kids bringing radios to school and so on, and have I mentioned more than once that I. deeply. hate. that all the games are played at night now.

I'm given to understand that a lot of people don't know how to listen to baseball on the radio.

Driving home from my father's place, I listened to the whole game on a Philadelphia station, and I was surprised at how poorly the Phillies' broadcasters described the game. There were several occasions when they said things like "strike 2!.. wait a minute, they're calling that a ball. How could that possibly have been a ball?" or "it's a fly ball down the right field line, so-and-so can't get it... wait, they're signaling it's a foul ball. Did that look like a foul ball to you?" There were enough of these sorts of things that it got downright annoying.

I was amused to find them using the old disco song "TSOP" as a theme song.
