Now that you mention it, there's some ambiguity in "just as much of a status marker." Until about ten minutes ago, I thought it simply meant, "it marks status just as clearly" [as the other thing.] It's only when I saw how you recoiled that it occurred to me it might also be read as, "it marks just the same status" [as the other thing], or something like approximately the same status.
