firecat: bag of popcorn and movie reel (movies)

I finally got to watch The Avengers. I liked it, but I wasn't blown away. Maybe partly because I have never read any of the relevant comics.

So I invite those of you who had strong feelings about it to talk about what you loved/hated about it.

Also, where's the best fanfic? :)

(If I were writing Avengers fanfic, I would write it about Loki and one or more of his doubles.)

I thought it was awesome fun, and pretty much devoid of deep meaning, but they managed to pack enough quips and action that I didn't care.

Loved the "Loki tries to take over Tony and it doesn't work" scene. Wasn't sure I liked the Steve/Tony/Thor banging around in the woods scene; it seemed too contrived--like, wasn't it convenient that nobody got really hurt?

I have more thoughts but nothing coherent right now; mostly wanted to drop fic recs at you.

The awesome fanfic: [personal profile] amalthia's Avengers Instant!recs links.

Not that there's not plenty of *other* awesome avengers fic, but you can start there. (Amalthia tends towards longer fics, and there's a lot of awesome short fics as well.) Here's two I love:
we were emergencies by [ profile] gyzym
It Starts Out Like an A-Word (As Anyone Can See) by [ profile] Amy

Some people are tagging Avengers fic with "OT8." There's a fanon consensus that the Stark tower should be renamed "the Stark orgy fest extravaganza hub."

The best fanfic seems to be landing on Archive of Our Own. Some of the character iterations are brilliantly done.

I thought it followed up the other movies pretty well. Good fun, if not deep. Went on a little too long, but still probably my favourite of the big summer movies.

I loved Natasha's role! She wasn't there to be eye candy or tragically killed, or a hard-ass Strong Female Character with no particular characterisation beyond that: she had her own story, friends, goals and methods and the way she played Loki was downright awesome. The way the movie modernised femme fatale was really fascinating to me.

Avengers! I've written my Avengers thoughts here (after my first viewing) and here (second viewing)! Other people have said wiser and more eloquent things somewhere, but I have no links to them right now.

I also have an Avengers (movieverse) tag, where there are some links, a couple of fics and random thoughts.

I like [personal profile] sam_storyteller's fic the best, but I've found bunches of it all over. I like this story about Darcy doing art with the Avengers a lot. My favorite fanfic author in general is [ profile] mhalachaiswords and she's done some Avengers fanfic recently.

And I tumblr a lot of Avengers stuff. [ profile] gingerhaze does amazing avengers fanart. I especially like HulkEye! And there's a whole tumblr for STony (Steve Rogers/Tony Stark) called superhusbands.

My favourite Avengers fics are Average Avengers Local Chapter 7 of New York City and anything by theorytale (disclaimer: theorytale is family so I'm biased :-) ).

ooh, I see someone already recced We Were Emergencies--anything by Gyzym is going to be good. She also wrote a country-western thing featuring Hawkeye that was pretty amazing, and surprisingly canon. :) A friend has a bunch of recs here, she generally has very good taste in fic. :)

I thought it was a helluva fine romp. I wasn't really into the Avengers as comic-book characters, but I knew enough to have the basic backgrounds for each of them (except Hawkeye and Black Widow, who I knew about only peripherally). But I thought the movie did a good job of bringing the audience up to speed without major data-dumps, and Whedon's dialogue and camera choices are always fun. (Notice, for example, that it's Steve Rogers rather than Natasha who gets the long lingering fanservice camera-pan up the body, with particular emphasis on the butt. And a very nice butt it is, too.)

My personal favorite scene is Hulk playing ragdoll with Loki and then humphing "Puny god." So perfect.

fic finding suggestions

I would suggest looking on Archive of Our Own, either by looking at things in the fandom ( or look in the bookmarks ( and then look for anything with Avengers as the fandom and a lot of kudos and/or bookmarks, which are good indicators that a lot of people have liked the fic. They're really well organized, and you can also easily search by character (ie Loki) if you want. Let me know if you want some pointers. :)

I tried to justify it to some kids in my class today who thought it sucked and The Dark Knight Rises was good. My line of reasoning boiled down to: "It's awesome and you're wrong." That got a few laughs.

The best fanfic, as others have said, is on AO3. I am not much with the reading fanfic these days but Snakeshark! is pretty much the greatest thing ever. It doesn't actually need to be Avengers fanfic, even. It's just hilarious.

Another friend just asked for fic in a locked post and got some wonderful slash recs (Tony/Steve all, I think), which I will now convey:

A Partial Dictionary of the Twenty-First Century

many names in history, none of them are ours

The Twice-Told Tale
(This was really impressive!)

Come At Me
(I haven't read this one yet, but it was the same recommender as the above three.)
