fandom_empire is a prompt challenge community that started this year and ran three themed 12-week events. The third challenge had a Powerball theme. I posted two works for it this month.

The challenges were pretty inspiring for me. I posted twelve works overall. A lot of people were much more active than me! There are over 500 works in the Fandom Empire AO3 collection.

I was so moved by the final episode of Loki TV season 2 that I wrote a fic about it the same night I watched it (crossover with Lucifer TV):

I participated in A Ficathon Goes Into a Bar (intoabar), which is a crossover challenge. You sign up with a character you want to write and 1–4 other fandoms. The mods assign you a character from one of them. You write a story in which the two characters meet in a bar.

Roundup: Dick-or-treat 2023

dick_or_treat is a challenge taking place during the months of April and May to produce smutty works with titles based on Pokémon moves. There are several regions (sub-collections) to post in and optional themed weekly challenges, each with a list of moves to choose from. Each challenge comes with a cute badge created by the moderator pornygon (see icon). It’s been running for five years and this is my second year participating. I wrote four works.

I still know almost nothing about Pokémon.

Fic for BeTheFirst: Back on Boogie Street (The Good Thief)

bethefirst is a challenge to write a work for a fandom that has no published fanfic yet. (You're supposed to check AO3 and fanfiction.net.) It has been running for seven years. This year the event had a record 48 fics posted—including fics for Tony Hillerman's Chee & Leaphorn series, "Love Shack" by the B-52s, and Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny.

I wrote a fic for the movie The Good Thief, directed and written by Neil Jordan. I was surprised to find there were no fics for this movie because there are lots of shipping possibilities, an "aging con man with a heart of gold" role that Nick Nolte was born for, and a fun heist involving a casino. Plus Neil Jordan's stories are kind of fannish in themselves, there's usually some "fairy tale meets gritty/noir urban" trope, and the soundtracks are full of wonderful old songs. (This one has "A Thousand Kisses Deep" by Leonard Cohen, among others.) Jordan does have a tendency to create less than fully developed female characters that exist primarily for the protagonist to react to, but he's hardly the only movie-maker to have that problem.

Fic (Lucifer: Weird West AU) for Spook Me Ficathon

spook_me is a Halloween ficathon. You choose from a list of creatures (well, tropes really, since the creatures include stuff like "Disease" and "Weird West") and sign up with a fandom you'll write in. You receive two image prompts.

Deadline was October 26. I thought, what is better as a birthday present to myself than to write and post a Lucifer-in-the-Wild-West fic? Turned out one of the image prompts (included with my fic) was the spitting image of Mazikeen as a gunslinger (and white wings).
