Roundup: Yuletide 2022

I finally managed to do Yuletide this year!

Yuletide is a long-running, very popular exchange for small-ish fandoms (with fewer than 1,000 works). The DW community is yuletide_admin, but that’s just a starting point. This year 1868 works were posted in 1141 fandoms (1141).

(In 2020, I treated but didn’t sign up. In 2021, I signed up but defaulted.) In 2022, I wrote a fic for the New Year’s Resolution collection to make myself eligible to sign up again, I signed up, and I wrote one work. I received two works.

I didn’t find time to participate in all the activity surrounding the exchange, such as submitting my fic for various sub-collections, or writing treats or pinch hits. I also haven’t yet read much of the collection beyond my own gifts. (Where did my time go???)

But I’m happy with what I wrote because I managed to read a book for it! (Reading books, as opposed to listening, has been elusive for me since the panini started.) I read The Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson and I wrote a fic about Baldr & Hel & Loki.

I received fics based on the fantasy series Carnival Row and the ethereal movie Only Lovers Left Alive.

Roundup: FicInABox 2022

ficinabox is a large exchange (800 works in 300 fandoms this year) that challenges you to write 10K words (or the equivalent in other media), but the words/other can be broken up into multiple works. Many different media types are explicitly included and can be requested via tags — for example "Reddit: In-Universe r/AmITheAsshole Post," "Knitting Chart," "Illustrated Text - Bestiary."

There's also a swap option. Once you receive your assignment, you can trade some of it in for another assignment. For example you can trade in 5K words of your assignment for 5K words of one or more other assignments.

This is my third year participating. In previous years I wrote a single 10K work, but this year I swapped 7K of my assignment for three other assignments. That was a bit of a mistake, because writing four 2K-3K assignments is more effort for me than one 10K assignment. I finished three and defaulted on one.

FicInABox is one of the exchanges that you need to complete to qualify for the Triple Crown prize (for completing three 10K exchanges). Once I'd written the three works and the medical issue that had gotten in the way of my completing all four fics was behind me, I realized that I needed to write only 300 more words to get to 10K and be in the running for Triple Crown. So I wrote a fourth fic, a late treat.

I received two wonderful gifts — both among my all-time favorites. FicInABox has been really good to me that way; I've received all-time favorite gifts every year.

I wrote Loki TV (Loki/Mobius); Our Flag Means Death (Lucius/Izzy) (in which I used one of the special written medium options: List of Things [Character] Is Not Allowed To Do); Bridgerton TV (Benedict Bridgerton/Henry Graville); and an original work, sex-magic-themed.

I received an Agatha Christie Miss Marple/Poirot crossover fic, and a fic based on Devil in a Blue Dress (1995 movie based on Walter Mosley's first Easy Rawlins novel).

Roundup: Unholy Fuck Exchange

holyfuckexchange is a new exchange that ran twice in 2022. Works must include sexual or romantic content involving at least one deity (defined loosely). The spring edition was called Holy Fuck and the fall edition was Unholy Fuck.

There were twelve works this round and I made out like a bandit because three of them were gifts for me.

I wrote Ancient Greek Religion & Lore, Aphrodite/Helen.

I received two Norse myth works — Loki/Odin and Loki/Angerboda — and one Doctor Who/Fairy Tale crossover — Jack Harkness/Trickster Deity. They were all delightful in entirely different ways.

Fics for Spook-Me Ficathon

spook_me is a ficathon event. Each year they offer a list of creatures and tropes and provide images as prompts. This is the second year I've participated. I've done it as a gift to myself since the due date is on my birthday.

I wrote about AJ Raffles and Bunny Manders from the series of books by EW Hornung, the first of which is The Amateur Cracksman. Hornung was the brother-in-law of Arthur Conan Doyle and Raffles was deliberately written along the lines of “if Sherlock Holmes was a gentleman thief instead of a consulting detective.” Bunny is more or less his Watson. I spent many happy hours researching 19th century photography and cameras for this work, which was fascinating. (Only broad strokes of the research made it into the story, I’m afraid.)

I received two gorgeous artworks! One for Ragnarok TV and one for Loki TV.

I had a great time writing a fic for the movie 3:10 to Yuma — I really fell in love with the movie. Russell Crowe’s character had scorching chemistry with several other characters; it probably won’t be the last time I write fic for this movie.

I received a Lucifer fic that went in a delightfully different direction than I would have taken for those characters. That’s something I like about exchanges!
