Hey what about Dreamwidth?!

So Facebook is targeting certain individuals for not using their legal names, and as a result a lot of folks, especially queer folks, are signing up for other social media sites, especially ello.co. And some of them are saying they're going to go back to Livejournal. I signed up at ello too because I feel compelled to stake out my preferred name everywhere, and because a lot of my friends have joined. But I am really sad and annoyed that no one seems to be considering Dreamwidth as an alternative social media site. I trust Dreamwidth a lot more than ello.co (nothing against them, but I don't know the people running it) and more than LiveJournal (although I'm still cross-posting to LiveJournal).

As far as actively investigating/interacting with media fandom is concerned, Star Trek: Reboot is mostly what did it.

TL;DR: Very late bloomer.

15. What's your current obsession? What about it captures your imagination?
I don't have a positive current obsession right now, and that's a problem. I'm happier when I have one. I expect one will eventually come along; I'm open to it.

I'm glad I've done various things, none of which I intend to post about.

In the depression community people are talking about an article in The Independent entitled "Is depression actually good for you?".

I left a comment there, that I'm unpacking/editing somewhat here.

I have chronic anhedonia and mild depression. I think it has affected my personality in some positive ways (I can think outside the box, I'm somewhat compassionate, I'm interested more in intellectual pursuits than purely sensory or emotional pleasure pursuits because much of the time I don't experience sensory or emotional pleasure very strongly [the last couple of months somewhat to the contrary]).

But it has sure also affected my life in negative ways.

There's a general trend these days to conflate an illness with the learning experiences that come with having an illness, and then to say "The illness is good!" Fuck that. Learning to be a better human being is good, but there are plenty of ways to do that without having an illness.

I noticed this tendency before, but since reading Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided, which discusses it at great length, I notice it more often. I used to belong to an Alzheimer's forum (my Mom had Alzheimer's). I was sort of appalled to see a thread entitled "I love this disease". I actually could relate to the content of the thread—people feeling like they became closer to their loved ones who had dementia, changed their views about what was important in life, learned that they could do things they didn't know they could do. OK, fine. But (with all due respect to YKIOK) saying that because of this, you love the disease? That doesn't make sense to me.

sparkymonster posts an analysis of the TV show RuPaul's Drag Race, in which she writes: "Civil War reenactments would be vastly improved if they were taken over by drag queens and become Stonewall reenactments. But with less acted out violence, more accessories." (I agree.) This season there is a fat contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race, Delta Work.

I like drag queens because I'm happy to leave almost all the femme to other people.

In boxofdelight's journal people are discussing young waiters who flirt inappropriately and I left this comment:

I've noticed lately that anyone old enough to be a grandparent is fair game for being flirted with by people in their 20s. (One of the times I noticed this was when I had to take my mother to the emergency room a couple of years ago, and the ER doctor, who looked kind of like a young Robert Plant, kept flirting with her. Now maybe he noticed that such behavior made his patients more alert, but it was just a little creepy to me.)

Anyway, I try to pretend the flirters are three years old, because three year olds flirt with everyone and it's cute.

I don't have a theme at this time (suggestions welcome), but I'm going to try to do at least one public post a day for the next three weeks. The posts won't be cross-posted to LJ but (assuming I remember) links to the posts will be.

This is the post for Monday 4/25. My clock says it's Tuesday but I haven't gone to bed yet. So there.

This article about humans, chimps, and bonobos is worth linking because it uses the phrase "polyamorous bonobo."

Over at codswallopers they're doing a poll: Which Shakespeare characters most deserve a slap with a wet codfish?

el jay crossposting policies

I like being able to maintain some separation among my various accounts on the Internet.

Therefore, I'm not planning to link my FB and Twitter accounts to my LJ account or enable automatic crossposting for my LJ journal entries.

I'm not planning to auto-crosspost my comments in other people's journals to FB or Twitter.

Occasionally I hand-post the URL to one of my public LJ journal entries to FB or Twitter. Occasionally I copy and paste a comment I made in another person's journal and repost the text elsewhere. When I do this, if the entry I commented on is locked, I don't mention where the comment came from, and I remove all identifying information.

I don't care if you auto-crosspost your journal entries or your comments on my journal entries. I will adjust my posting habits with the assumption that such things might happen. (E.g., I might allow comments on DW only for my locked journal entries.)

I have a dreamwidth account at http://firecat.dreamwidth.org (aka firecat)

I already have a permanent account on LiveJournal and only a regular paid account on DW, so I'm not planning to leave LJ. I currently plan to cross-post most public entries between DW and LJ and to enable commenting on both journals. I'm not sure yet what I'll do with locked entries.
