Reading Wednesday

Just finished: Bread and Stone by Allan Weiss. This was really good, and filled a much needed niche both in Canadian historical fiction and working class historical fiction, which is to say there just aren't enough strike novels out there. The ending felt a bit abrupt—things are going downhill and William just...books it, albeit with some vague plan to continue the struggle elsewhere, but we don't really see the aftermath or what becomes of anyone else. Which is admittedly very true to life but it felt like it was either begging for a sequel or an afterword or something.

Currently reading: Inventing the Renaissance: The Myth of a Golden Age by Ada Palmer. I have been looking forward to this and have had an advance hold on it at the library since she started posting that it was coming out. This is a big thicc chode of a book, nearly as long as it is wide, and the very sight of it (ebooks weren't available for holds so I got it in hardcover) delights me.

It begins with a wholehearted defence of Machiavelli so I kind of knew going in that Palmer's Renaissance Opinions were likely going to align a lot with my Renaissance Opinions, which admittedly are not as informed as hers but still pretty informed. From there, she takes us all on a fucking Journey, complicating the various facets of the Renaissance—chronology, geography, ideology, and so on. Humanist, in the context of the era, doesn't mean what we think it means. There isn't a clear division between the Bad Middle Ages and the Glorious Renaissance the way we conceive it—that is an invention not just of Renaissance thinkers but of later historians. As dedicated to puncturing myths as Palmer is, she loves this era more than anything and interrogates it with humour and passion.

It's very hard to be doing things that aren't reading this book right now. I'll probably buy it in ebook form later so that I have a searchable version.

Two letters with easy, easy answers

1. Dear Care and Feeding,

My husband ā€œChadā€ and I have a 4-year-old son, ā€œLane.ā€ Recently for his birthday, my parents gifted him a set of Winnie-the-Pooh books. It’s been a tradition in my family for the last three generations for kids to read these books. But my husband won’t let my son have them.

He says doesn’t want Lane to read them because he insists that Winnie-the-Pooh is for girls. I’ve never heard anything so stupid! How can I make him understand that Pooh is a character that has been beloved by both boys and girls alike for nearly a century now?

2. Dear Care and Feeding,

My wife ā€œCarlaā€ and I have a 3-year-old son, ā€œAndy.ā€ Andy became a big brother last month when we had our daughter, ā€œIsabelle.ā€ Andy had been reliably potty-trained for four months before Isabelle was born, but within days of bringing Isabelle home from the hospital, Andy began having accidents. Carla’s solution has been to put him back in pull-ups. I don’t think allowing him to regress like this is a wise idea. She says to let him do it for the time being if it makes him feel better. It seems to me that taking a firm approach (making him go back to using the toilet or face punishment) would be in his best interest. Who is right?

Everything is fuzzy

The last few days have been kinda… I dunno how to explain it. Kinda weird and low energy sometimes. Like at times it feels like my brain is just… switched off which is annoying. At least there’s only low levels of random sadness in brief parts so it’s not fully depression or anything it’s just… occasional bleh.

But anyway.

First things I meant to post about in the other post but slipped my mind completely at the time.

Friday was the Arrow reveals for October. I had high hopes that there’d be something good, after all last October had J-Horror Rising and Trick R Treat. Plus I was also hoping for a Clown In A Cornfield uk release cause Arrow has the Shudder licence and released one thing already (at least). Alas no Clown and no J-Horror boxset either. There was Three Extremes, which is combined with something just called Three, so I might get that. And there’s also In The Mouth Of Madness which I’m curious about too. (Has anyone seen that? Is it good?) I have had a code for 20% so I might see if I can use it on preorders.

Also I was on insta the other day and there’s a Birmingham Horror film festival happening in October, which I’m kinda curious about. I’m waiting for more specific details about timing and the films, cause all it says is it’s happening on the 11th and 12th. Tickets don’t seem too bad either, it’s Ā£15 a day or Ā£28 for both. It could be a fun thing to do, but I’ll keep an eye out for more details.

And speaking of films the cinema has posted show times for next week so the plan is to go and see Superman before the mystery film showing next week. (Weather and mindset permitting.) I’ve never been to a mystery showing of anything before so I’m hopefully it’ll be something good.

As mentioned the last days were a bit low energy but I did start watching Wednesday. I went in mostly blind but I wanted to check it out cause the season 2 trailer did look interesting. I didn’t expect to get sold on it as much as I did, but I really enjoyed it and I’m suitably intruiged by the mysteries set up by the end. Mum was watching it too which surprised me. I think it’ll become a regular Sunday thing to watch.

(And yeah I still haven’t watched the Stranger Things finale, I dunno why the length is just so off putting but it is and it hasn’t helped with my eyes being so achy these past months.)

And I’m still hopeful about finishing Hell Motel and getting back to American Horror story. It’s just hating time zones and bad mindsets. Bleh.

Last night I just ended up watching the PokĆ©mon stream which is fun to watch cause it’s playing old episodes, though damn it was jarring. One moment they were in the orange islands, with Tracy and Ash getting the last badge and then the next they were in Johto with Brock, so there was a massive skip of episodes which was a shame.

I am back to reading Clown In A Cornfield and I read 5 chapters yesterday, and would have read more if it didn’t go so dark. I’m hoping to read another after lunch. It’s gonna be interesting watching the film once I’ve read it to catch the differences.

But after this I wanna get back to reading more. I need to do the Read Christie books and I wanna get back to the Star Wars ones too but it’s having the focus which is so annoying.

I wanna try and work on fic, finally finishing something for the prompt table I’ve had for months. And I also wanna post the one to ao3 but my brain has be just been, again, bleh.

(And ugh don’t get me started about our government pushing censorship with a ā€˜think of the children,’ narrative cause… ugh)

Life with two kids: death

Two days ago Sophia told us her thoughts about death. She had clearly thought about it a lot, worked through various things, and come to some interesting conclusions.

Unfortunately she told us all of this in front of Gideon, who has now spent two days bursting into tears intermittently and telling us he doesn't want to die.

I'm sure he'll also work through it, but in the meantime it's hard not to feel sorry for him. I suspect that starting school in two weeks and being away from home for a week aren't helping, as he's also intermittently telling us he wants to be back home.

Do I have any Grace Petrie fans (totally fine if we don't know each other, all Dreamwidth Grace Petrie fans are a friend in waiting) who wanna come see a preview of her Edinburgh show at the Bill Murray in Angel tonight? 6:30 show, wraps up by 8, according to her :) Her last stand-up show, Butch Ado About Nothing, was FANTASTIC.

We saw the huskies yesterday!

Moonpie started to get super hyped up, as usual, and so did they, so I picked her up... and ended up with two huskies eagerly jumping up on me to say hi to their best chihuahua friend!

Well, at least my feet were firmly planted. Before we saw the huskies, on our earlier walk, we bumped into a friendly yorkie (?) - no collar, no people. But well-fed and groomed, this isn't another Finn. He eventually disappeared under a fence, but I've been asking everybody I saw if they know whose dog he is exactly, because I was that worried. Was he outside alone in the heat? That's no good.

Anyway, I asked the guy with the huskies, and he had no idea, but he told me something else - the day before, he thinks he saw a fox! I'm not sure he wasn't just mistaken, but if he isn't - wow! I know we have bunnies on the South Shore, and coyotes in the Bronx, and whatever the city says we definitely have a full time population of deer mid-Island, so maybe a fox isn't so strange.

i once had lots of pride, the world was in my hands

Still here. Still applying for jobs, now including tech writer jobs. So far I've gotten ... a single initial-phone-screen. The economy really is shit.

Marker-edging and gluing all the Ogre Designer's Edition models proceeds apace. I've discovered that, mm, around ten percent of the tank models were miscut in ways that will require Surgery. The models are constructed out of cardboard punch-outs, with notches in them that slide together to go at right angles. Except that for some of them, the die didn't punch straight down, it punched down at an angle. Which results in leaning, drunk-looking cybertanks. I've maybe another dozen to do that were cut properly, including ... eight? eight where I'll get to be Creative on the marker-edging colour. Then I guess I take a craft knife to some of the notches, and hopefully manage to adjust them to be less drunk, with minimal bloodshed.

Depending on how I'm feeling I may consider marker-edging all thousand-some counters as well. When I write it out like that it seems less likely. On the other hand it would look really good.

I am managing to keep myself more or less functional, mentally/emotionally as well as task-completion-y. I've been going out biking several days a week. Today I made it out to Central Park, a ride of 8 mostly-uphill km that takes me about an hour (and forty minutes to ride back), and sat under the trees and had a picnic lunch and a bit of a meditation. It was good. Getting out is a struggle, especially when it's been over 25C most days, but it's always, always, worth it.

Been doing some yoga as well. My tolerance / ability to convince myself to do yoga seems to cap out around 30-40 minutes. So I'm getting through the entire standing sequence but only a couple of the floor sequence stretches, and none of the cooldowns (except savasana, of course). Might benefit from accepting that this is how long I can talk myself into this, and shortening the sequence so I get the whole thing, even if it's less of it.

I got out my bass last night as well. I am unsurprisingly terrible, but surprisingly less terrible than I'd expected. When I was teaching myself back in, jeez, 2021 I guess, I developed some rudimentary technique, and that seems to have stuck at least a little bit. I'm curious as to whether I'll be able to get anywhere with self-teaching.

Reading, too, but that can wait til tomorrow as is proper.

I hope you're well.
