Tie dying for me took some standing up (to rinse the clothing under running water after dying) and strength (to twist the clothing and bind it, and to wring it while rinsing).
You can dye stuff a single color in a washing machine. That probably takes less standing up - you do need to fiddle with the machine dial a few times. Here are some instructions (scroll down to where it says "washing machine"):
