there's a thing here where some new build flats are for public sector workers and you part rent part buy them. i was pretty keen to do it, though it would have been a financial squeeze. this was just before i got ill. to this day i wonder if it would have worked out ok or whether i would have ended up homeless. as it was i was in public housing, so stayed where i was, and can claim rent as long as i get benefits... being actively homeless would probably have tipped me over the edge.
