End OTW Racism

The OTW promised three years ago to take certain actions to address racist harassment on AO3. They haven’t acted on most of their promises yet, and I think it’s reasonable to ask them to do so and to be more transparent about how they plan to address the issues. I investigated the call to action at https://end-otw-racism.tumblr.com/ which suggests several ways you can promote the demand for action, and I support it. So I added the following to my AO3 profile:

I support the demands and goals of the Fandom Against Racism protest at https://end-otw-racism.tumblr.com. I call for OTW to act on commitments made three years ago to address racist harassment and abusive content on the AO3 site.

And I sent the following to the OTW board of directors via the contact form here: https://www.transformativeworks.org/contact_us/

OTW member requesting action: Act to make OTW and AO3 inclusive, safer spaces for fans of color.

Dear OTW Board of Directors,

I am a long-time OTW member and I'm asking you to act on the sites' problems with racism. OTW and AO3 should be inclusive, safer spaces for fans of color. Please move forward with the actions you agreed to take three years ago against racist harassment on AO3. Specifically: Implement policies to address harassment of AO3 users. Update protocols for the Policy & Abuse Team to ensure consistent and informed resolutions of abuse claims. Create and enforce a content policy on fanworks that are intentionally used to spread hate and harassment. Hire a Diversity Consultant by the end of 2023. Publish regular updates on the progress of these projects.

Yeah, I did the same. I'm not sure what the right direction is, but they really do need to at least communicate what they're doing to find out.

I hope that getting pressure from the people who use the AO3 and especially people who have OTW memberships well get them moving in a direction, transparently. (I'm not holding my breath on that, but it would be good if it did.)
