(Actually, I have a grocery bag full of gorgeous fat quarters that I picked up at [livejournal.com profile] leandra333's family's garage sale a few years ago, so in this case my "wanting" is mainly for the time, motivation, and talent.)

I now have a long line of craft projects I want to do. My self-imposed rule is that I need to finish one before I start any more. I'm currently partway through... um, depending on how you add it up, three. That seemed like a good place to stop accumulating, except that I keep seeing things I badly want to do.

What exactly are 'fat quarters'? From looking at places that sell them, they seem to be rectangles of (potentially assorted) fabric; is that all or is there something more specific in their definition?

(I'm being stalked by 'fat' as an unexpected adjective. This morning, I ran across a recipe for 'fat cookies', and can't figure out what makes them fat. and it doesn't seem euphemistic for shortbread, either. stalked, I tell you!)

A fat quarter is a quarter square yard of fabric in an 18"x22" or so rectangle. It's called "fat" because fabric is sold in bolts around 44" wide, so if you just ordered a quarter yard of fabric, you'd get a 9"x44" rectangle. The 18"x 22" rectangle, which is a better shape for quilting purposes, is "fatter" (more square) by comparison.
