firecat: cat rolling back and forth (rolling cat)

OK, now I've heard everything

I just got a phone call. I picked it up and said "Hello". I heard a
recorded message that said:
We are sorry to disturb you. This message was intended to be heard only by an answering machine. Thank you.

*blink*

Great. Now the machines are talking to each other.

Unless something has changed...

And things might have changed in the years since I looked all this up, It is not permissible for a automated calling system to call a human being for calls originating in California. This sounds like a goofy atttempt to outwit that bit of regulation (or statute, I can't remember which).

Supposedly, if you answer you phone, and it's a California call, there will be a real person on the other end.

Oh, my, is that not true. George Bush, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Jesse Jackson, and more have called me, not to mention carpet cleaning firms and aluminum sidings firms.

I have not, however, gotten anything like what [livejournal.com profile] firecat reports. That is beyond description.

Oh really?
I don't pick my phone up anyways, but I always have computers calling...

Wooooow. That story could so easily be warped to imply a clandestine meeting of machines while their owners are out ...

From an alternate universe in which answering machines record messages and then never play them for you, because they don't want to bother you.

The MACHINES are RISING UP!! HIDE!

I've got this too. My assumption is that it's some sort of scam where they leave an 'urgent' message on your machine asking you to call a number that turns out to be a premium one.
