The Daily Kos blog has a great article about Detroit today. I grew up in one of the nearby white-bread suburbs. Insofar as Detroit culture reached to where I was (which it partially did because I had several friends who lived in the city proper), the author creates a really accurate portrait of the city and its people.

I don't think very much about Detroit or consciously miss it, except when I read stuff like this.

Thanks for this. I forget that Detroit is one of the things we share.:)

Last June, my little brother got married. I happened to phone him one night before the wedding and he was watching the first playoff game. He explained that this is the only time he really roots for Detroit. So I started watching the playoffs. All 7 of us (plus a bunch more) met in Georgia for his wedding, and we watched the rest of the playoff games together. It was a nice family-bonding moment. Also, the Pistons teamwork had a profound effect on me. I will never forget that series.

Same here! And I thought the same thing when I read it.

For me it was/is Rossford Ohio where I was born (outside of Toledo.) I am not sure that I could easily live there now; there is still a strong connection though.
