Skeery kitty

I couldn't resist taking photos of this kitty while she was waking up from her nap.

The top picture shows a red retina in the left eye. Is that a lighting/photographic artifact, or the real anatomy?

If the latter, I'd never known before that albinism in cats can extend to the eye's retinal screening pigments.

(Is the kitty deaf? There are two genetically distinct forms of hereditary albinism in cats, one of which also affects hearing.)

It's a lighting artifact. She has blue eyes. Here is a photo taken without flash.

Point 1 - The red coloration I was thinking of is _inside_ the eyeball, on the back wall where the retina is. The "blue eyes" you're thinking of is the iris, a different structure. (Another way that feline retinal pigmentation manifests itself is the reflection of indirect light when the cat is in an otherwise completely darkened location. Can you see an iridescent greenish color?)

Point 2 - You didn't insert the no-flash picture, or provide a link.

1. My cats frequently have "red" eyes if they look at me while I take pictures: http://cats.mjlayman.com/catchair.jpg They all have green eyes, although Spirit (up front) is going blind. Her mom was a Siamese and it's a genetic disease.

2. She makes links lavender and I've gotten to where I guess right most of the time. In that post, it was the word "Here."

Oh my gosh, your kitten is our kitten! The only picture I can find similar is my boyfriend's icon, right now:
Image, and my icon, but I have a photo somewhere IDENTICAL to the ones above. Craziness! What's her name? Ours is Nico. And I'm convinced that she has some "Foreign White (http://www.geocities.com/foreignwhitecatsociety/)" in her, just with the high cheekbones and giant ears...

She needs to go in the Spontaneous Opera Syndrome (http://www.flickr.com/groups/s-o-s/pool/) Flickr pool.
