BAKICIDW/LJ: transporting dog from Florida to California?

My mother's sister in Florida passed away last week, and my parents want to adopt her miniature Schnauzer. My cousins in Florida are willing to arrange this, but none of us has any experience with it. Apparently there are services that will help transport an animal. Do you have experience with any such services? Do you recommend or dis-recommend any particular one? Tips/warnings?

I would consider checking with Schnauzer rescue. There are requests on the Belgian lists all the time to help transport dogs to their new homes - people essentially pitch in and agree to drive the dog two or three hours to the next person.

Alternately, if both parties are near a major airport and can get a non-stop flight, air transport as cargo is not the worst option, except that there are weather embargoes this time of year due to the dangers of heat exposure.

I heard a piece on NPR last month about an airline/service that's flying pets in pressurized cabins, but I don't remember the details.

Animals flown as cargo are flown in pressurized areas (otherwise, they wouldn't survive). The weather embargo is due to exposure during loading and off-loading and while the plane is stationary. It takes very little time for an animal to overheat in those conditions.

I also saw links about an airline reserved for pets, but I can't find the reference.

[livejournal.com profile] drive4life might be helpful (it's all-volunteer). I think that's the LJ name.

I have a friend who works with Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue; the organization's on the web. Perhaps they can put you in touch with someone in Florida. Good luck!
