How the heck do you keep on top of Tumblr?

I really like some of the alternative/political stuff being posted on Tumblr, but I find it difficult to keep up with because of the lack of a reading list feature. If you keep up with Tumblr how do you manage it? Bonus points if your answer is something other than "refresh it every 10 minutes all day." :-)

So, I'm not very familiar with Tumblr, but I thought following + the dashboard was the reading list equivalent?

I choose who I follow very carefully, and use tumblr saviour to remove anything they spam too much of.

(Also I am home all day with nothing better to do than refresh it a lot :))

I don't keep up. I skim. Some people I read all of but mainly I skim.

I created a separate tumblr for some subjects. THen when I have the spoons to deal with my responses to those subjects I can read those tumblrs.

I don't know of a way to have 2 tumblrs open at one time.

you could try opening one in an incognito chrome or firefox window, since they don't share cookies with the main instance. indeed, two incognito windows should be sandboxed from each other too, though i've never tested that.

You can track tags and some groups will make special tags for their own use. You can check out Tumblr Savior, it might have some options for you. Like someone else said, you can make sub-Tumblrs and use each as a subject reading list.

If I understand correctly, you log into your main Tumblr and make sub-Tumblrs from that. You don't have to log out from the main account to see the others.

Subtumblrs can't follow, so you can't use that to make separate dashboards for ease of reading.

I just go to the tumblrs of people I think make good posts every couple of days.

Like everyone said - I follow only those whose posts I want to read or don't post too much. Checking the tags is also good. Though sub-Tumblrs means extra dashboards to me.

I gave up and haven't gone to tumblr (except to posts linked from DW) in two months.

I only follow a couple of people on Tumblr and just use RSS feeds to do so. But I don't really understand Tumblr, so....

Me too. I heartily dislike Tumblr, since it doesn't really facilitate discussion in the way that my preferred form (ye olde classic blog) does. With the comments scattered among fifty-gazillion "so-and-so reposted this" messages, conversation via comment threads seems pretty impossible, to my eye. There are one or two Tumblr accounts I have any real willingness to follow, and for those I have made RSS feeds, and I follow them on my DW flist. The rest I ignore, unless someone on my flist posts a direct link to a post on Tumblr that is of interest to me.

I skim a lot, and I accept that I'm not going to see everything. If something really good comes along, I trust that someone will reblog it eventually at a time I can see it.

I don't do anything in particular. I mean, I do check it often. But I just scroll back to the last thing I saw each time. If I go too long, I don't worry about seeing *everything*. But mostly I don't find it that difficult to keep on top of. A lot of it is kind of rapid-scrolling.
