Where do you get your coffee beans?

*sigh* I was just reminded that Peet’s Coffee is owned by a larger corporation now (has been for some time). I‘d rather support a smaller company. If you make coffee from ground beans at home, what is your go-to source? Bonus for fair trade and all those other green, good-citizen buzzwords.

I'm still mad at Peet's because when they changed owners several years ago they very openly stopped giving a shit about tea. Also, they feel like Starfucker's now. I like cafes with a soul if you understand what I mean by that.

I buy pretty much exclusively from a few hyperlocal roasters -- maybe a tour of roasteries in your region is in order? (Or does that just sound like work?)

I have a subscription to Hyperion Coffee. They're amazing, but I bet you can find something equally amazing close to you.

My wife's currently buying from these folks, who are about 20 mins from us: https://smokestackroasters.square.site

(ETA: They're Fair Trade and so on and so forth.)

When I was in a similar feeling, mostly about chocolate after I read a book on the chocolate industry, [personal profile] sixbeforelunch suggested Keats & Co. It was good. I ordered a bag of the Octavia (the medium/dark roast) and loved it. But it was too expensive for me to buy regularly. I even did a collage about it :)

The other one people recommend at that time was Equal Exchange https://shop.equalexchange.coop/ I have not ordered their coffee, just their chocolate, and it was good.

My partner in Minneapolis has bought from Cafecito Power / 23 de Mayo Coffee once or twice. (She mostly doesn't because she's a single mom and whole beans are pricey.) Per the website they source from an Indigenous community in Colombia and pay them 12% above market.

I was going to rec ThunderIsland, a Native owned coffee company, but the shop is no longer available.

I do like Cameron's Coffee, owned by a Colombian Supergroup.

Fair trade, organic coffee roasted in Canada by a small company (30 employees).

They do sell to the US:

Noticed this on my network page. When it comes to coffee I have to answer.

A small coffee roaster in Maine. You'll find some Fair trade coffee there too.
My personal favorite is Backdraft.

Wouldn't help you, but there's a local place here that I go to. My favourite is Caffe Ladro in Seattle.

I don’t drink coffee (thus do not make coffee at home), but Devout Coffee in Fremont is the one place I’ve tried a friend’s coffee and been able to understand why anyone would drink such a thing. And it’s Coffee Snob Friend Approved, which is why I was there in the first place XD (not sure where they’re at on the good-citizen buzzwords, but they’re small and iirc local-ish to you?)
