And I don't think I've had Edna before??

Recuerdo

We were very tired, we were very merry—
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry.
It was bare and bright, and smelled like a stable—
But we looked into a fire, we leaned across a table,
We lay on a hill-top underneath the moon;
And the whistles kept blowing, and the dawn came soon.

We were very tired, we were very merry—
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold.

We were very tired, we were very merry,
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry.
We hailed, “Good morrow, mother!” to a shawl-covered head,
And bought a morning paper, which neither of us read;
And she wept, “God bless you!” for the apples and pears,
And we gave her all our money but our subway fares.

13 books new to me, and save for one mystery, all fantasy. Man, fantasy is just eating SF's lunch. Not that that will be reflected in what I actually review.

The small multi-flowered yellow narcissus are still blooming, while the later narcissus in pale butter yellow and white haven't started yet. It has not been a good spring for daffodils -- yet? It's finally time for the native flowers: violets are rioting, the red buds are beginning to shimmer with color. One red bud i had transplanted some years ago on the south berm has blossoms. The volunteer at the other end of the berm seems strangely inert. The surviving dogwoods are opening their white bracts to the sky. I've lost some creeping phlox to a combination of weeds and drought. The spice bush blooms seem to have been lost this year, overwhelmed by the grey-green leaf-out of the invasive autumn olive and possibly their own leaves. The Chickasaw plum had so many flower buds, but i think rain and freezing weather limited the show. A juneberry in the woods by the driveway has a few high blossoms. The one i have planted still waits for the right time: perhaps it still needs a few years.

We have been in "severe" drought since January, the longest since we moved here, and the most severe since a terrible "exceptional" drought in 2007-2008. (None of this like California drought, which was "exceptional" from 2014 to the end of 2016.) No indication of any frost chance for the next ten days, barely any rain.  I've probably wasted all the money i have spent on grass seed.

It was overcast last night so i missed the moon-Venus conjunction and any chance of dim aurora.

I am intending to see some family at lunch today, and to dig and assemble my new raised beds. I hope to get the complicated parts -- assembly, leveling the site, trenching the French drain and adding coarse gravel, a screen, and finer gravel mostly done this weekend. Then i think smaller efforts trundling fill from various sites will be easier.

The Thomasville citrangequat has been ordered; tabs open for two pineapple guavas and a yuzu. I've ordered seeds of goat's rue (Tephrosia virginiana), a native legume with showy flowers, as a nitrogen fixing cover crop. I am imagining adding a few artichokes to act as a cover, too, until the trees fill in. Maybe a lavender.

My performance at work this week was not good, much frittering, and that needs to pull around.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: Dave Sheppard, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Sam Carter, Radek Zelenka
Rating: Teen
Length: 7998
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: busaikko on AO3
Themes: Siblings, Family, Post-canon, Outsider POV

Summary: Dave Sheppard learns more about his brother and gets drawn into a tangle of secrets and truths.

Reccer's Notes: This is from Dave's POV, as he and John cautiously reconnect via emails, then more, after their father's funeral. I really like Dave here, separated from his wife and still in love with her, baffled by John and wanting to understand him better. They do gradually reconnect, and eventually some Trust shenanigans lead to Dave meeting all John's team and being read in about the Stargate program. The characterisations of Dave and John are excellent, with Rodney's relationship with Jennifer Keller, then with John, happening in the background. One of my favourite Dave Sheppard fics.

Found a nice gaming article on Bluesky (Three Tiers of RPG Publishing), which led me to another article, which I found insightful and clever (and a bit sad, as accurate talk about economics these days tends to be), and then hit the bit that blew my mind.

They Killed Normal and Called It Progress: "Julia Roberts, Applebee's, Bandcamp, your manager, and the death of everything in between. (Also, Sweetgreen is the A24 of dining and I will die on this hill.)"
Have you noticed that the middle is gone from everything? Restaurants, companies, careers, music, retail, the economy itself. What replaced it is a barbell: one enormous weight on each end, nothing in the center, and most of us trying not to get crushed by the bar.

And the replacement does look better every single time, I grant you that. The A24 film is better than the $40 million adult drama from 2007, yeah, we can all agree on that. The Sweetgreen bowl is better than the Applebee’s chicken parm, sure. Your favorite Substack is sharper than the mid-list magazine that folded in 2019. Every replacement is a genuine upgrade. But every replacement serves fewer and fewer people.
That's not the mind-blowing part. That's the thesis, the baseline, the part that he spends half of the ~3000 word essay explaining, giving examples of, making neat comparisons across different industries.

It's amazing that it doesn't get boring because it truly is the same damn pattern )

- For fic reasons, I've been watching the first night of Knebworth 1996, and gosh, the footage is gorgeous. Incredible that they sat on it for almost thirty years. Here's an example:

- Speaking of Oasis, did you know the mangaka of Chainsaw Man also wrote a one-shot about two young female mangakas? And more importantly that the title Look Back is a direct reference to the Oasis song Don't Look Back in Anger? Yes.

- Have a silly video about the Oxford comma, among other punctuation. Really takes it up a notch in the second half.

- Trailer for Dune Part 3!! My perspective of the Villeneuve Dune movies is that the visual spectacle is incredible, but they're a little too self-serious and not weird enough. The books also take themselves very seriously, but make up for it via frequent batshittery. However, I'm definitely interested to see how Villenueve finishes things up, especially since he'd started going off the map by the end of part 2, and part 3 appears to all be taking place in the gap between the end of the first novel and beginning of the second. Here's hoping for lots of Jessica. 🙏🙏🙏

- They cast Jason Momoa's son as Paul and Chani's kid. Let the Paul/Duncan mpreg headcanons begin.

- You can now filter your AO3 bookmarks by wordcount!!

- IDK how it never occurred to me before that the bugging scene in The Matrix would spawn a whole new kink, but it absolutely did, and I stumbled across that corner of deviantart earlier this week. Bless.

- I'm not going to do a whole Oscars postmortem, but horror movies got EIGHT awards, which has got to be an all-time best, including two of the four acting awards. I'm especially happy for Michael B Jordan and Sinners cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw.

- Tough week for Buffy fans. I'm relieved that the reboot appears to be DOA; I was going to watch it, but I wasn't hopeful. Meanwhile, sucks about Nicholas Brendon. Losing him and Michelle Tractenberg a year apart, when they were both so young, is fucking rough.

As for me, my rescheduled retina appointment went fine. Some of the issues have cleared up. Prognosis very good. I had to transfer between power chair and clinic chair three times. As I told them on the final occasion: I have a bad knee and a worse knee. Trying CBD ointment in addition to Voltaren, on the advice of my now-former primary care. (And I know who my new primary care is going to be, yay.)

It's possible that my retina appointments this year are cursed. On the last attempt, my car was so low on battery that it died at an intersection and there was a whole drama with a guy who scared the whole block and tried to open my car door. This time we got there okay, but Belovedest suffered a flat tire while out with [personal profile] alexseanchai later in the day. This wrapped up with Thorn having to come rescue that Toaster with a wrench that actually fit the nuts. (Cue penis measuring jokes.)

Summer 2026 Signups are OPEN!

The sign-ups are now open!

Treats Policy: As of February 2022, AO3 has introduced a setting to let users opt out of receiving additional gifts outside of formal exchanges (in Holmestice terms, "treats"). Please indicate whether you are or are not open to receiving additional fan works based on your sign-up. Also be sure to check your AO3 account preferences, under "Collections, Challenges and Gifts". AO3 accounts made before February 2022 default to ALLOW gifts, whereas new accounts default not to. Because signups are not handled through AO3, you MUST turn on treat ability if you want your gift posted to AO3. More information regarding this setting is available on AO3.

If you have a Dreamwidth account, join the Dreamwidth community and create a new post using the template below with your offer and request. The template is designed to be used with the HTML editor (not the Rich Text editor).

If you do not want a Dreamwidth account, you can leave your sign-up as a comment on this post using the "Anonymous" option. If you choose to use the Anonymous option, please make sure you correctly fill in all the identifying info in the template, so we know who signed up and how to contact you.

The sign-up template below includes ratings for what you're willing to create and would like to receive. Sexual content is deliberately separated from violence and other mature themes, so if you are someone who enjoys PWP but not violence, you have an easy way of indicating that (or vice versa) for the mods and other Holmestice participants.

The template also includes a list of suggested Holmesian fandoms and iterations. This is not an exhaustive list -- if you have another fandom in mind, please include it in your sign up! Alternatively, if you're open to offering or receiving any Holmesian fandom, please feel free to say so. (Although do make clear what you mean by "any" -- very few people truly can offer every pastiche, film, television, radio, and graphic novel adaptation ever made!)

Please note when putting down relationships:
  • "/" (e.g., "Holmes/Watson") indicates a romantic or sexual relationship
  • "&" (e.g., "Holmes & Watson") indicates a friendship or other platonic/fraternal/non-sexual/non-romantic relationship

Do please make sure you're using / and & correctly in your sign-ups, as we use it to determine matches, and your match will use it to determine what sort of relationships to write for you.

Matches will be made on fandom, characters/pairings, categories, and ratings. All other details you include (besides any "do not wants") are optional; i.e., your gift-maker may take inspiration from any specific prompt you include, but they are not required to use them.

New this round: By popular request original music has been added to gift type! You can offer or request this along with fic, art, podfic, graphics, vids, etc.

Sign-up Template )

You can edit your post until sign-ups close on April 13. Anything you add or delete after that will not be taken into account.

All stories must be a minimum of 1,000 words in length; icon posts must contain at least 10 icons; vids must be at least one minute in length. Any type of fanwork is required to go through some kind of beta process. All finished fanworks must be posted to AO3 and/or sent to the mods at holmesticemods(at)gmail(dot)com on or before May 25. Directions on how to post/submit your work will be posted to the community later in the round. If you don't submit your work by the due date and have not contacted us for an extension, we will automatically look for a pinch hitter.

If you need your recipient to clarify their prompt or if you want to ask whether they're all right with that one particular thing you'd like to include, please contact us at holmesticemods(at)gmail(dot)com, and we'll forward the question for you to preserve your anonymity.

Please remember that if you sign up to receive a gift, it'll only be fair if you create one as well. That said, if you have to drop out of the exchange for any reason, please contact one of the moderators as soon as possible by e-mailing us at holmesticemods(at)gmail(dot)com so we can find a pinch hitter to create a gift for your intended recipient.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out!

Note for this round: Two members of the mod team, [personal profile] iwantthatcoat and [personal profile] vulgarweed, will be at 221B Con in Atlanta during the weekend of April 9-12, spreading the word about the exchange and hopefully bringing in new folks. There will be a panel and meet-up, like last year, which was a big success. Come find us and talk Holmestice with us!

AI-generated pieces are not welcome in this exchange.

I knew that other contemporaneous cultures than those of Europe had unfathomably higher numbers of books than Europeans did, but I didn't know about this in retrospect obvious reason why:

2026 Mar 19: Dwarkesh Patel feat. Ada Palmer [DwarkeshPatel YT]: "Why Medieval Books Cost as Much as a House" (1 min, 7 sec):

Without papyrus, what you're writing on is a dead sheep. And if you think of the price of a head of lettuce and the price of a leather jacket, you're understanding the difference between a sheet of papyrus and writing on a dead sheep. So every page of a medieval book is as expensive as that much of a leather jacket. And a medieval book hand written costs as much as a house.

And so to have a library is to be not just rich but mega rich. So only the wealthiest cities contain anybody who has a library. The great library of the University of Paris, the library from Europe's perspective, has 600 books.

There's definitely more than 600 books in this room. Every kiosk at an airport selling Dan Brown novels has more than 600 books. This is nothing.

And at the same time as that, in the Middle East, sultans have libraries of over a thousand books or 5,000 books. There are libraries in Sub-Saharan Africa with thousands of books.* There are libraries in China with thousands of books. Because they in China have cheap paper and rice paper. The Middle East has papyrus.

Europe, and only Europe, is writing on a leather jacket.
* Three hundred thousand. It's been thirteen years and I am still not remotely over that fact. Every time I encounter it anew, my SCA persona gets acrophobic trying to imagine a library that big and has to sit down and put her head between her knees so she doesn't pass out.

The previously expected ICE enforcement surge never materialized. Curious.

I wonder if this just means they're short-staffed. Or perhaps distracted.

(I also wonder if somebody made a judgment call not to try what they did in MN in MA, but have largely rejected the notion. It would not be to anybody's advantage if they did, on either side, but I'm not seeing a lot of good judgment in evidence anywhere.)

I like oatmeal. I particularly like the steel cut oat groats oatmeal that involves more time than even traditional rolled oats. But, I also like brown sugar and cinnamon, though not the amounts found in brown-sugar-and-cinnamon instant oatmeal packets.

Today I had a revelation. I do not have to buy flavored oatmeal in horrible instant oatmeal packets that are overprocessed and way too sweet.

I can totally make the oatmeal I like and add brown sugar and cinnamon (or other flavorings) to suit me. It is okay to make delicious flavored oatmeal out of whatever oatmeal and whatever flavorings I might like.

This completely obvious and uncomplicated notion was revelatory to me today, so perhaps other people need to hear it too.

I've got a friend, a MUSH person, [personal profile] badfaun here, who lives over in Seattle, and who I have known for uh, 20 years now?, who's in the late stages of metastatic breast cancer, that spread to her brain, and is now in the cerebro spinal fluid, which is impressive in its inventiveness and staying power if nothing else.

(This is ileah/Francisco/Heart, for any GarouMUSH people around.)

She's pretty stubborn and pretty great, but the spread to the CSF is Just Not A Good Thing, and she's now going to be going to hospice.

Love to her, and her husband [profile] aerynvale, who's been a rock in all this.

I woke up this morning with a really puffy arm, from elbow down to hand, and it felt like I had exercised a lot, but I Had Not, so Calluna and I bundled ourselves off to Urgent Care, and Urgent Care looked at it, said, "Hm, likely not, but Just In Case..." and bundled us off to Emerson Hospital to get an ultrasound, which made me almost fall asleep, which was nice.

And I don't have a blood clot, but I do have sucky blood pressure. Which I knew. So I don't *think* it's an allergic reaction, but I do think it's vein related somehow, so, mystery.

For most of the morning it was gorgeous and sunny and in the 50s, and very springlike, which fits since it's the equinox and the first day of spring, so, happy spring!

Then we got lunch and coffee and started down Route 2 to Arlington to retrieve my wallet, WHICH the Arlington Police in fact found a day or so ago, after I had ordered new everything, (But I can at least get my driver's license for ID purposes. And the wallet, which I like.) *But then*, sitting at a traffic light, we got slammed into on what I thought was my rear end but was actually my passenger side. Passenger side airbag deployed, lots of broken glass also deployed, some of it onto Calluna and a little tiny bit on me. All told, about 6-7 cars were involved, plus Route 2 was closed for like an hour.

I'm very much lacking information about who hit whom and how, but it *seems* as if the person who set the chain reaction going is the one who ended up in front, and rolled over. No one would let me stick around or figure out other people's information, which makes sense because there was like, gas leaking and stuff. Not-very-informative news article.

This time I let them impound it because Calluna needed to get checked a the hospital (same one we just came from!), and I went along for the ride/also to get checked out. (I'm fine; she may have a slight concussion and her neck's hurting.) 'm pretty convinced it's totaled, but unlike when I got run into in Coventry, RI, Concord's only 45 mins or so from me, so I can go retrieve all my Stuff from it Sunday when I also go get my durn wallet.

Happily, my s-i-l loaned me their ancient and venerable Prius so I have wheelz currently.

Fist my bump!

The last few days my focus has again been off, mostly because of the damn sawing/drilling outside starting up again. (When will it end?) along with post gig tiredness,

Last night I did end up watching Ready Or Not cause of the sequel being out. What amused me though was I got the blu ray cause it wasn’t available anywhere (and discounted) but then last night I found it was both on tv (on film 4) as well as on Disney+. Ah well.

I did enjoy it though, it was mostly a fun time with incompetent rich people getting outsmarted and dying. I. Hopefully I can see the new one soon, though I’m not sure when (causa Megacon then 5sos). I did consider seeing it today as my usual two film thing but decided not to.

Today I went to see Project Hail Mary. I was gonna go in the morning to avoid more sawing, but I woke later than expected (15 minutes before I’d have had to leave) and just didn’t feel up to going right away. I was thinking of just going another morning, but did decide to see it on the second showing (part to get out cause I got riled up by mum being bitchy).

Trailers were mostly films I’d already decided I’m seeing: The Odyssey, The Mandalorian And Grogu, Super Mario Galaxy, plus a Supergirl one which I’d not seen. There was also a Hunger Games trailer and, bar going ‘is that him from the Long Walk?’ I’m eh about it. I’ve not seen the films and I dunno how they’ve gone on so long. But then again maybe if I saw them I’d see why? I dunno.

Anyway!

Before I go into thoughts, beware these will be slightly spoilery, especially since this is a new film (but I’m trying to keep it just with stuff seen in trailers). But! BeforeI get to thoughts I’ll simply say this: if you’re thinking of going to see this, go see it. I know it’s long (over 2 and a half hours) but it is so worth it.

Honestly it’s one of those films that’ll be the top ones of the year (joining Iron Lung, Cold Storage and Kangaroo).

But onto thoughts, which are under this.

Gonna snug now, then tomorrow it’s the seapeekay randomathon tomorrow. I might do a music post but we’ll see if my brain can fic some too.

Medicare advantage, again

It turns out that changing Medicare Advantage plans is not costing me significant money: it looks as though the money I paid for prescriptions at the beginning of the year counts for a calendar-year maximum, even though I switched plans. I ordered another dose of Kesimpta on Wednesday, and they aren't charging me for it. As I said to [personal profile] cattitude and [personal profile] adrian_turtle, I'm glad that I could have afforded to pay that twice, but there are plenty of things I'd rather do with the money.

As a side note, this plan will pay for $65 per quarter of over-the-counter medications and some related things. I used part of this quarter's today to order Mucinex, Imodium, and an under-the-tongue digital fever thermometer. I think I can get them to pay for non-emergency transportation to medical appointments, and I should check what dental coverage I have.

Had some spice tea. God, did I have a crazy morning. Normally in my bldg there are a bunch of grocery carts that the maintenance guys use to haul around stuff and us tenants use for laundry and to get groceries. The grocery outlet is several blocks away and for years you could use carts from other groceries and just take them and put them back later. Well, I was trying to do this when the damn cart freezes up completely when I haven't gotten to the store yet, in fact I haven't even gotten more than halfway across the parking lot. I consider trying to get another cart when I get into a conversation with a woman who had accidentally locked her keys in her car. I try to help but there isn't much I can do, then she says if I go in and get my groceries she'll give me a ride home if she's been able to get to her keys by the time I come out. So I go in and get my groceries and when I came out she had gone! I was so pissed.
Now you need to know one of the main reasons I don't have Uber is I haven't put my credit card on my phone because I'm too paranoid about my phone getting lost or stolen. So I tried to call a taxi and I had to call SIX taxi companies before one would even tell me they would come over there. Then they were at least 20 minutes late. By some MIRACLE, a lady drives up and offers me a ride. As we're driving out of the parking lot the damn taxi driver calls me and SAYS he's there. I got a very good look out of the woman's car windows and there's no taxi in the damn parking lot so I just tell the guy I already left. (I had also been standing in front of the grocery outlet for a VERY long time with my damn arthritis so my legs really fucking HURT. there are no benches or anything to sit down on in front of the grocery outlet).
oh, and I forgot the damn potatoes!

From that reliable source of journal prompts, [community profile] thefridayfive

1) What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)?

Volunteered for WisCon in 2007, clearly LJ was where everything was Happening. Took me a year to figure out the culture. Moved to DW on 1 May 2009.

2) How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to?

79! Most are evidently dormant. (DW comms never die.)

3) Do you have a favorite community or one you check out often to see what's new?

I love the questions and answers at [community profile] little_details, where writers seek specifics about an infinite assortment of facts: paint manufacturing, historical Chinese tornadoes, NZ slang for three examples.

4) How did you pick your user name?

It’s a riff on my wallet name which I’ve been using it since 2001.

5) If you could change your user name, would you?

Nope.

The preceding two weeks of Friday Five questions didn't pique my interest, but this week's are great. Love a bit of meta-blogging. Thank you for the opportunity to navel-gaze.

  1. What was the reason you began a Dreamwidth or LiveJournal account (or both)?

I started off on LJ in 2001 because everyone was doing it. I created an account and then let it sit for a couple of weeks while I figured out what it was for. I think it was victorine who prodded me into posting regularly and then I just…never stopped.

  2. How many DW or LJ communities do you subscribe to?

A few dozen in total. Most of them are dead, the LJ communities in particular. The only one I participate in regularly is DW community [community profile] awesomeers, because I'm one of the two people who puts up the daily “Just One Thing” posts. I find it easier to write a short comment about my day there than to write up a full post, especially during the work week.

  3. Do you have a favorite community or one you check out often to see what's new?

See above. I also enjoy [community profile] thefridayfive, and I like reading [community profile] threeforthememories during its annual spate of activity.

  4. How did you pick your user name?

My current username is a play on my actual name. My original LJ name was “lilith” as that's the pseudonym I first adopted when I started interacting with online communities back in the 90s. Eventually I felt I'd outgrown it, and I've been nanila ever since.

  5. If you could change your user name, would you?

That would genuinely be a big decision after more than 15 years of using this one, in a lot more places than DW and LJ. I'd have to do substantive additional navel-gazing to work out what it would be.

There are 16 squares. 7 brown, 3 mostly-brown, 6 mostly-white. All of the completed squares except for one of the brown squares have been blocked and have ends woven in. I am 38% done with the knitting of squares. I have enough mostly-white yarn for one more square (probably). Y'know, I could use my scale to WEIGH THE YARN and see if there's probably enough. I could compare to an existing mostly-white square. Let me go do that.

There are 46 grams of yarn and 48 grams of square. So, maybe not enough yarn but it'll be close. To avoid rage-quitting due to being short of yarn, I'm going to have to make more mostly-white yarn before proceeding on that front. And that means it's time for some mostly-brown squares with the new, excitingly squishy yarn that has sufficient twist in the plying. Yay!

Wasn't there a scarf?

I do not want to talk about the scarf. It's not scarf season anyway and won't be for a while.

And the boidies around here in the past week have included the heron in the eco-pond being very up for a closeup, Mr de Mille, parakeets, and several magpie courting couples.

There have been a fair amount of flowers blooming in the spring, trala, for some weeks now, the daffs have been a particular feature, calling Mr Wordsworth, and today there was a massive show of narcissi along one edge of the playing field.

Among the less flamboyant flowers, the Wildflower Corner included grape hyacinths, and dandelions.

The trees along the street are busting out in leaves and blossom.

We also note that toxic nitrogen dioxide pollution in London has fallen to air quality standards in under ten years (rather than the projected nearly 200).

Hello Hello! All of our pinch hits have now been claimed, and the collection is tentatively set for revealing at 10pm EDT on the 29th of March.

We still have six works that need to be filled by hard working pinch hitters before the collection can reveal, so I will be able to update all of us at the latest on the night of the 28th regarding whether or not the collection will reveal on the 29th, but my expectation is that everyone will come through, which means it is getting Very Close Now Indeed, and it's definitely time to start getting those last polishing edits in, avoiding scope creep for real this time, etc etc.

We're almost there!

The birds are singing, the evening light is beautiful, and my salad greens, herb, and cucumber seeds are sprouting in the growhouse. It's a lovely start to the weekend.

Today's Friday open thread prompt is courtesy of a suggestion from [personal profile] lirazel: what are some types of food that only taste good when handmade/made on a small scale (as opposed to the industrial scale supermarket version)?

My immediate response was 'what type of food doesn't taste vastly better when made on a small scale by hand?' but then I thought a bit more, and realised there were quite a lot of foodstuffs where the difference is non-existent (homemade chips where you chop up a potato and roast it in the oven or deep fry it are no more delicious than the fast-food equivalent), or where the effort involved to make it by hand far exceeds any reward in better flavour (condiments in particular: I'm not going to make my own soy sauce, harissa, dijon mustard, etc, you know?).

However, I'd say that beyond the 'too much effort required' category, in my experience most other types of food are better if they're made on a smaller scale. The biggest one for me is baked goods. There is no bread, cake, pie, biscuit, or pastry on Earth in which the mass-produced supermarket (or otherwise industrial-scale) version tastes better than, or even remotely equally good as, the homemade or expensive artisanal bakery version. (I admit to some significant bias here. I worked part-time from the age of 15-23 — the first years of my working life — in artisanal bakeries/patisseries, the first thing I look up in every place I visit is the most highly recommended bakeries/patisseries, and I'm just in general a massive baked goods snob, which is somewhat hilarious in that I'm a very good cook, and comically, catastrophically bad at baking.)

What are your equivalent foodstuffs, if any?

Yesterday was far more peopling than usual: a day of meetings and then went to see my niece play the protagonist in Mean Girls: the High School version -- that goes on forever. (I think it's the full theater version but with softened innuendo.) It might be less painful if someone knew how to set the gain on the mics. My niece and the antagonist both have powerful voices. I wish i liked musicals but recent exposure because of my niece has not improved my opinion of the format.

I continue thinking about my relationship to "doing", and refocused on time not intentionally spent. I've realized by "intention" i have excluded things i will do anyway, which historically included journaling  (although for a number of years that has not been as true as perhaps i need). And meals, and relaxing with Christine. Time dealing with physical irritations and discomfort. Digital irritations: application forced upgrades and restarts.  There are many other things in that category, but i think i generally accept that they exist. The solution isn't adding more overhead -- more decisions about priorities and mucking about with lists -- but allowing for the time in intentions and valuing it.

I'm recognizing there are (at least) two other types of time not intentionally spent: avoiding and escaping. I think once upon a time i was "better" with my avoiding time. When work was so hard for me i believe i spent more time journaling and understanding my feelings, framing my frustrations, and clarifying why i was upset -- and then i could move forward. There were also more of the classic "procrastination" behaviors of doing X instead of Y, which i seem to have subverted in some ways. Now neither of Y or X get done.

I think some of the weight -- disappointment? dissatisfaction? --  i am carrying lately is more about how much time i spend in avoiding and escaping. I may be in a viscous circle where having become more aware of intentional vs avoiding vs escaping time i cannot become unaware. As the avoiding feels increasingly out of my control, my frustration escalates, feeding into the emotional demand to escape. In the past, it seemed i could just escape into one novel, and then feel "reset" and get back to business as normal, but that sense of reset seems far less accessible now. All 11 novels in a series later, still not "reset," rereading a trilogy still not "reset."

Ah yes, another type of time not intentionally spent is distraction, which is possibly a variation on avoiding and escaping, but i think its another class altogether.

And every one of those recs is better than the books. Well, I've shared my opinion on the books, the problems and characterization are insufficiently balanced for dual viewpoints.

But anyway, that's not what I'm thinking about. What I'm thinking about is Fabian and his generically shitty parents who clearly don't care about him very much. Read more... )

Summary: Bucky’s dad always says what they do is important.

“We give people the dignity they deserved in life,” he says, seriously.

Uncle Danny laughs at that. “Jimmy-kid,” he says, “your old man has got some real trumped up notions of what it is we do. Death ain’t beautiful. We just help create the illusion that it can be.”

Reccer's Notes: This is a really interesting look at Bucky's life before the war, and his family, and all the things that shaped him. The OCs are very well drawn and I love the details and thematic resonance of the family business.

Summary: Courfeyrac falls through the roof of no. 7 Rue de l'Homme Armé, taking down not only the ceiling, but the carefully built walls Valjean has constructed around himself and Cosette. Wacky hijinks ensue.

Reccer's Notes: This fic is madcap and fun in all the best ways. The shenanigans and hijinks are wonderful ... and at the core of those shenanigans and hijinks are Courfreyac and his siblings, as they draw Cosette into a quirky but loving family. (And also try to get everyone safely through cholera and a failed revolution.) I love all of the distinct and interesting characters, both canon and OC. I love the shenanigans. Fandom: Ballet Shoes
Characters/Pairings: Posy Fossil
Rating: General
Length: 5203 words
Author Links:
Theme: siblings, family, female characters, gen, book fandoms, old fandoms, small fandoms, future fic

Summary: "There was a terrific row when Nana found out I'd only written one letter so she's sent me to write to you all properly, only I don't have anything left to say now and I do think it's silly to have to copy out the same letter twice." Posy Fossil's letters to her sisters from ballet school in Czechoslovakia, 1936-1938.

Reccer's Notes: Ballet Shoes is a delightful story about three sisters in 1930s Britain, their guardian, and their nanny. At the end of the story, one goes off to Hollywood under a studio contract, one goes to live by an aerodrome to learn to fly, and the youngest (Posy) goes to Czechoslovakia to be trained as a ballet dancer. Posy, the youngest, loves her sisters but is also self-centered and focused on her dancing. This is the first time she's ever been away from her sisters since she was a baby, and the letters trace that relationship even as they're hundreds and thousands of miles apart. But no matter how far apart they are, no matter how different their lives are, they still love one another. [personal profile] deepdarkwaters captures Posy's character, and her relationship with her sisters, perfectly.

Dear Carolyn: My friends think I’m stupid. I’m a high school junior, and I go to a highly academically competitive school, where it is expected by my peers that you are supposed to take at least three AP classes. My closest friends are taking five. They are constantly stressed, overworked and burned out. My peers believe the only way to get into a “good” college (whatever that means) is to take as many AP classes as possible and to get the highest SAT score as possible. This, I know, is ridiculous on so many levels, but I stay out of it.

Lately, however, my friends have been shaming me for only taking one AP class, and for taking one standardized test vs. the other. I am going to college for musical theater, and admissions for those programs rely primarily on auditions, not grades. So why on earth would I put myself through so much stress if it won’t affect my college admissions? I’ve tried to explain this to my friends, but they think they know better than I. Additionally, they equate my taking only one AP class with being stupid. In the AP class I do take, my friend consistently shuts down and mocks my ideas with her other friends.

I’ve tried to mention the reasons I don’t take too many hard classes, but it’s like talking to a wall. I’ve also explained that since I was diagnosed with ADHD a year ago, I am now more aware of what I can handle. When all else failed, I even mentioned once that I have an IQ of 135 (tested when I was diagnosed with ADHD). I am actually quite smart. My friends stared at me and said, “Yeah… I think they lied to you.”

This hurts my feelings and happens so often that I’ve even started to believe I am stupid, despite all evidence to the contrary. Now I’ve started subconsciously playing into the “token dumb friend” stereotype because that is all I’m surrounded with. Should I not respond and ignore it?

That means it can be a scene/snippet from solving a case rather than a case being solved from beginning to end. (One panel for art will be accepted. Podfic that records a drabble will be accepted. Fic that's a total of 500, 1,000, etc. words will be accepted.)

  • Prompts or links to letters (past or one specifically for this exchange) are optional and are very welcome.

  • Please list any DNWs in your comment.

  • Please do not reveal who you are pinch hitting for in your comment.

  • You can find our full guidelines in our rules post.

  • If you have a question regarding a pinch hitter's request, please email gumshoeagency@gmail.com with your questions.
