I participated in A Ficathon Goes Into a Bar (intoabar), which is a crossover challenge. You sign up with a character you want to write and 1–4 other fandoms. The mods assign you a character from one of them. You write a story in which the two characters meet in a bar.

This is the fourth year I’ve participated. This year my character was John Wick and the fandoms I chose were American Gods, Innkeeper Chronicles, Jessica Jones, Umbrella Academy.

Summary: The man on the barstool next to Zed was showing too many teeth. And he was one of those historical re-enactors, she was sure. He was wearing an army greatcoat, the likes of which she’d last seen in some World War II movie. Not the sort of person she was looking to interact with tonight. She didn’t mind nerds or actors or other such people, but there was too much on her mind right now.

bethefirst is a challenge to write a work for a fandom that has no published fanfic yet. (You're supposed to check AO3 and fanfiction.net.) It has been running for seven years. This year the event had a record 48 fics posted—including fics for Tony Hillerman's Chee & Leaphorn series, "Love Shack" by the B-52s, and Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny.

I wrote a fic for the movie The Good Thief, directed and written by Neil Jordan. I was surprised to find there were no fics for this movie because there are lots of shipping possibilities, an "aging con man with a heart of gold" role that Nick Nolte was born for, and a fun heist involving a casino. Plus Neil Jordan's stories are kind of fannish in themselves, there's usually some "fairy tale meets gritty/noir urban" trope, and the soundtracks are full of wonderful old songs. (This one has "A Thousand Kisses Deep" by Leonard Cohen, among others.) Jordan does have a tendency to create less than fully developed female characters that exist primarily for the protagonist to react to, but he's hardly the only movie-maker to have that problem.

Summary:

Rumor has it that Bob Montagnet, addict, gambler, and criminal mastermind, has come out of retirement to plan one last job. Roger, the cop who’s obsessed with him, needs to stop him before the plan fails, as it is sure to do. If Roger has to send Bob to jail again, they’re going to throw away the key.

This looks like a great challenge. I wonder how many digressive words I've cut from the fics I've written. A lot...and then there are the ones I have left in...

I haven't signed up yet because I don't know what fandom I want to digress about.

The writing period is all of 2022.

spook_me is a Halloween ficathon. You choose from a list of creatures (well, tropes really, since the creatures include stuff like "Disease" and "Weird West") and sign up with a fandom you'll write in. You receive two image prompts.

Deadline was October 26. I thought, what is better as a birthday present to myself than to write and post a Lucifer-in-the-Wild-West fic? Turned out one of the image prompts (included with my fic) was the spitting image of Mazikeen as a gunslinger (and white wings). Bonus links to two "Ghost Riders in the Sky" performances, one sung and one on piano.
