A miscellanea
16 Mar 2026 07:17 pmThis is so much what I've been thinking about a different period that I'm writing about - that it's there, even though people are saying It's Ded, it's just not doing the flashy newsworthy visible stuff or the results are the things are are not, or no longer, happening: The one thing everyone gets wrong about feminism.
***
I am a great admirer of Professor Athene Donald's blog, and I like this recent post: Unintended Consequences - in particular perhaps this apercu:
Business gurus tend to talk about ‘being authentic’ as the right way to lead. But if you are a testy, over-bearing soul being authentic may be very destructive for those around you.
So much that.

This is another story about mobility in the world: Looted from a royal palace: The medieval jug now on display in London:
A large bronze medieval jug bearing the English royal coat of arms would be a rare find if dug up in England, but somehow it had ended up in West Africa, in modern-day Ghana, thanks to early trading routes between nations.
Dating from between 1340 and 1405, the jug is the largest surviving bronze ewer from medieval England. Decorated with an English inscription, royal heraldry and coat of arms, it was originally a luxury object — but its meaning changed dramatically as it moved across continents.

I've had to do with either this artefact or another very similar in my working days, I did not know about the biological contamination (we didn't know for quite some time about the radioactive notebooks, either): a parchment scroll designed to guard against the dangers of childbirth:
Until now, this scroll’s worn surface and suggestive staining constituted the main evidence for its use in childbirth. However, new research by Sarah Fiddyment, presented in the exhibition, reveals that human proteins found on the scroll’s surface indicate the presence of cervico-vaginal fluid. This is an important breakthrough in the burgeoning field of biocodicology, which seeks out the invisible traces left behind by users of manuscripts, as they held, rubbed or kissed a parchment.
(I hadn't heard that story about the dormouse, but wot she does not mention the Godalming rabbit lady?!).

You know, I would have sworn that back in my working days I came across something appertaining to this historic event: How smallpox claimed its final victim, but I'm unable to trace it.
Day 21: Shadow Continues to Mellow
16 Mar 2026 02:11 pmWhile he was quite surprised to walk out for his morning on-leash ablutions into heavy snow above his knees, he's really starting to relax.
This morning I reached down to stroke his back and he didn't flinch.
Just now I was resting on the floor by his bed, petting his back. I started to scritch the scruff of his neck, and he relaxed even more, his dark eyes shining up at MyGuy behind the camera. (I'm reclining on my tripled-up exercise pad just behind him, shockingly without glasses.)

Poem Post: Tracy Fuad, "Object Exercise"
16 Mar 2026 11:31 amObject Exercise
First you must gather the objects.
Open the polish and polish each object
until every object is coded in polish,
a thin film that takes on the shape
of the object. Then dissect every
object with a circumstantial blade.
When the object is fully dissected,
remake it, but more in your image.
Then use concise scissors to prune
the object, removing what wilts
or yellows. Turn up the object
sound. Then dissect again. Hold
each piece to check for resistance:
if it withers, it's an object.
If it's shudders, it's a subject.

AO3 Releases 0.9.453 – 0.9.456: Change Log
16 Mar 2026 05:29 pmWe started the year with some major improvements to our bookmark search, making it possible to sort and filter bookmarks by word count, and deployed several batches of fixes to strengthen site security and improve performance. These release notes collect all changes made to AO3 in January.
Shoutout to first-time contributors Juliette Curran, KooShnoo, Mae Light, and sanchal ghosh! Thank you for your work.

Details
Release 0.9.453
On January 21, we deployed some major improvements to our bookmark search, including the ability to filter and sort bookmarks by word count!
- [AO3-6301] – Series blurbs would list all fandom tags from the works included in that series, even if a work was still saved as an unpublished draft. Now series blurbs only display fandoms from posted works.
- [AO3-6303] – Series blurbs would also always list fandoms from works that were restricted to logged-in users. We now make sure that if a fandom in a series comes from a restricted work, it’s not listed when a guest is browsing series blurbs.
- [AO3-6304] – Relatedly, series blurbs would always show up in bookmark listings for a certain tag even if that fandom’s work in the series was restricted to logged-in users. That’s also fixed now!
- [AO3-6471] – We have added word count information to bookmarks! You can now search, filter, and sort bookmarks by the length of the bookmarked work or series. If a series contains restricted works and you’re not logged in, a series’ word count will reflect only the works that are accessible to you.
- [AO3-7119] – We tweaked the way search queries work when searching bookmarks, so input is parsed more accurately and a “1k” and a “2k” tag won’t be interpreted as the same tag anymore (for example).
Release 0.9.454
A small grab bag of fixes was released on January 26.
- [AO3-7264] – We employ certain measures to prevent spam on AO3, such as limiting how many times an action can be performed by a user in a certain time frame. We have now added an option to restrict new accounts more severely than older accounts when it comes to leaving and editing comments.
- [AO3-7238], [AO3-7262] – We added extra information to the details our spam-checking provider uses to determine if a comment is spam or not.
- [AO3-7045], [AO3-7060], [AO3-7248] – Some database clean-up and dependency updates.
Release 0.9.455
On January 28, we deployed some of the necessary changes to enable two-step verification for AO3 admin accounts.
- [AO3-6918] – These changes prepare the login interface for 2FA enforcement to ensure the greatest possible security for admin accounts.
- [AO3-7249] – Site admins, such as members of the Policy and Abuse committee, frequently need to look up a user’s past usernames and email addresses. To speed up searches while we work on long-term performance improvements, we moved this information to separate tables.
Release 0.9.456
A collection of navigation and display fixes was deployed on January 30.
- [AO3-6869] – On devices running iOS, footnotes on the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports form were misaligned. Now everything looks tidy again.
- [AO3-7028] – In one of our public site skins, some pagination links had become unclickable. If you’ve been using the Low Vision Default skin, now you can page through a user’s works in collections again!
- [AO3-7213] – On narrow screens, the “Suggest a Language” button on the Work Languages page was slipping behind the list of languages and couldn’t be clicked. That’s also fixed.
- [AO3-7247] – Fixed the broken link to the Fannish Next of Kin FAQ on the Technical Support & Feedback form.
- [AO3-7251], [AO3-7266] – Some code clean-up.

16 Mar 2026 12:12 pmAnd then I checked my email. What was that, like 20 seconds?
There's a thing I wasn't expecting to have to deal with until late May, and now I have to fit it in this week. And it's just a phone call, but it's a pretty big deal and I'm going to have to do a lot of prep for it, both practical and mental/emotional. And gawd, I just want to curl up with my tax forms and not deal with anything else, and instead I'm gonna have to fucking adult and I just don't wanna.
This always happens when I set aside a chunk of time to Just Do This. It's like blocking out the time creates a magnetic field that attracts other obligations. I wanna hide in a Faraday cage for time management.

The Snake Prince and Other Stories
16 Mar 2026 10:46 amA varied collection. I think a little overwritten, but the tales are a new slice, fitting a new culture. Fairy tales, including a kind and unkind girls featuring a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and a unique take on burning the skin of the shape-shifted: the Naga prince is not killed but he is rendered mortal to live and grow old and die with his bride.
Also tales of fools and clever men, and animal tales.
Most are recognizable types, but not close to other variants.
rambling thoughts about lawrence of arabia
16 Mar 2026 10:18 amWe used to know how to make movies! The cinematography and special effects and production design are just insane--every frame is just swoon-worthy. God, what a good-looking movie. There are many movies that are better in a theater, but this one is one where I'm like, "If you see it on a smaller screen, you aren't really seeing this movie." The long shots of the tiny dot in the distance growing larger and larger through the heat waves coming off the sand! MY GOD! The colors! The huge casts of riders on camel or horses or in tents! The train stuff! The dunes and the escarpments and the echoes! The costumes and the texture of the fabric! The on-location sets! CINEMA!
I get very upset thinking about how huge movie budgets are today and how they all look so fake and slick and uninteresting and the color is bad most of the time and the lighting is bad most of the time and I just don't understand how we've regressed in this medium as much as we have. Also: film will always be superior to digital, I don't care what anyone says.
Anyway, visuals aside, I hadn't seen the movie in like 20 years and I was pleased to find that it's also just a well-done story. Like, there are issues with it! The brownface casting is Not Cool! The white savior of it all is...something else!
But also, it's just such a good movie actually? Everyone's at the top of their game. No offense to Albert Finney, but I am so very glad that O'Toole got cast because I just don't think anyone else could have played that character in such an unnerving way. His scary blue eyes! I'm like, "Yeah, that's a man with ghosts and demons and delusions of grandeur and severe mental health problems who is wavering on the edge of a breakdown at all times but I also get why people are so enamored of him." There's also something striking about O'Toole's gigantic head and narrow little shoulders that add something extra to the whole performance.
OMAR SHARIF! God, I love him in general but specifically in this role. Just top tier. I'd forgotten about Lawrence and Ali's meet-
It's very weird being like, "Damn, Anthony Quinn and Jose Ferrer are so good in this, but also they should never have been cast." Like, I don't blame them that much, as Latino men in the early 60s, but lbr it's shameful that Omar Sharif was the only Arab in the main cast. Sir Alec Guiness looks disturbingly like King Faisal, actually, it's bizarre. But brownface is still brownface, and I Do Not Approve. Shout-out to my man Claude Rains, who is always fantastic. Was Quinn nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for this? If he wasn't, he should have been.
It's significantly less racist than it could have been? Which is not to say that it isn't racist, but the Arab characters are all real people with believable motives, and the movie never once questions that they are right and correct to want both the Turks and the Brits out of their country that isn't a country yet.
I also deeply, deeply appreciate the script. It doesn't try to explain to us why Lawrence is Like That. We get one single line about him being illegitimate, but that's it. The why of it all is left up to us as viewers. Was he born that way? Was he dropped on his head as a child? Is all of this coming from daddy issues or the trauma of British boarding school? We will simply never know! Which is as it should be! In a contemporary film, there would be a scene in childhood that ~explains~ the character, and it would piss me off. Here, people are just complicated. Because they are people. It's not a biopic in the way we now understand that genre, or at least it defies all the tropes. It's about a couple of years in the life of one person.
And the psychosexual stuff isn't overdone. It's absolutely 100% there--this is a very gay movie even if the movie doesn't really know it's gay--but it isn't heavy-handed. The scene with Ferrer as the Turkish bey? INSANE. So good.
And yes, there is something extremely problematic about the only significantly English-language film about the Arab Revolt being centered around a white English dude. But also: he was a real person and the movie realizes that he was as bad for the Arab independence movement as he was good for it, which I appreciate.
I would totally understand why a contemporary person would be like, "Between the brownface and the white savior-ing, I do not need this film in my life." That is a very valid and in fact morally superior opinion! However, it's a movie that already exists, not one that's being made now, and there's nothing we can do to change it at this point in time, and it's an incredible bit of filmmaking, so I do deeply appreciate it while also judging it hard for all the ways it should have been better.
Anyway, my opinion is that if you ever get a chance to see this film in the theater, you should take that opportunity because you will leave it thinking, as my dad Paul Simon says, that's why God made the movies.
Some things got done.

Eligibility
To be eligible, it must be possible to experience a fandom in 8 or fewer hours. Here is how to determine if a fandom is eligible:
- For Movies, TV, Podcasts, Cartoons, Music Videos, and other timed fandoms: total runtime of all seasons/films in the main fandom should be 8 or fewer hours.
- For Books & Literature, internet posts, memes, and other written fandoms: total length should be at most 500 book pages or 125,000 words.
- For Comics, Manga, Graphic Novels, Webcomics, and other sequential image panel fandoms: it should be readable in 8 hours, which means it varies depending on format. Generally, the total length should be no more than 8 manga volumes/comic trades, or 45 manga chapters/comic issues, or 1,000 fast-to-read paneled pages, or 500 full-size, text-heavy paneled pages.
- For Video Games, Board Games, Visual Novels, and other interactive media fandoms: total time for a complete playthrough that imparts significant canon knowledge should be 8 or fewer hours, as shown on howlongtobeat or demonstrated by a non-speedrun “let’s play” style video on YouTube.
- For Visual Art, Photographs, Sculpture, and other non-written, non-interactive, non-timed fandoms: approved as long as apprehending the entire work takes 8 or fewer hours.
- For Historical or Media/Actor RPF: an evidence post comment on a per-character or per-ship basis showing that the relevant media, documentary film, biography, and wikipedia/fanlore/fandom wiki pages can be read and/or watched within eight hours. This post should be linked in sign-up request details so that participants will know where to find canon.
- For RPF not tied to historical figures or specific media: these will be approved on a case-by-case basis if it can be demonstrated in an evidence post comment that all relevant material is easy to find and can be consumed within 8 hours. This post should be linked in sign-up request details so that participants will know where to find canon.
- For Crossover pairings: canon length is determined by the combined canon length of the two fandoms.
- Anything not covered above: will be approved on a case-by-case basis, make a comment in the evidence post!
Individual stories in anthologies count as their own fandoms. Examples include a season of True Detective, an episode of Black Mirror, or an episode of a non-serial competition-style TV show.
Exceptions will also be made for single books, movies, etc that, while technically part of a larger series, are sufficiently distinct from the greater series and can stand on their own, on a case-by-case basis.

15 Mar 2026 09:41 pmFound out after the place closed, when I stopped for gas, so I couldn't even call them to see if they found it. (Will tomorrow, just in case.)
On the bright side, I'm going to be near my main bank tomorrow anyway, due to visiting my parents, so I can just get a new ATM card then. And I had to get a new driver's license anyway due to address change and not getting around to it yet, so, again, not a big thing.
Just, as usual, I liked that wallet, and I annoy myself. Harumph.

15 Mar 2026 09:00 pmDown to 1034 fandoms wrangled. Almost exactly 100 dropped since last check-in.
I did a big “invitation to all wranglers, look through my list and grab any webcomics you want” post, and managed to hand off 80+ that way. The rest are from dropping more A’s and B’s.
Only 39 of these have any tags that need wrangling. Higher than usual. I didn’t wrangle as much last week…tbh, I was low-key hoping some of the lightly-active webcomics would get claimed in the big invitation post.
(By “lightly” I mean “there are 1-5 new tags.” It’s still not an overwhelming burden, here. Just a mild annoyance to check lots of individual tag bins.)
While I’m at it, AMT updates: My “please combine the redundant Frosty the Snowman fandoms” request was approved, so my count will go down by 1 when that gets processed. The Madoka Magica requests I mentioned last month…are still on the waiting-for-approvals list.
I haven’t actually made the request to restructure the Fake News tree. The wranglers of other fandoms involved have all signed off on it — but now I’m waiting on a response to a different question. Which I kinda suspect has been forgotten at this point. Maybe I’ll just go forward, on the premise of “since nobody has responded to say [thing] is a roadblock for the tree, that means [thing] is not a roadblock for the tree, and I won’t worry about it.”
Pinch hits #32, 62, 70
16 Mar 2026 02:01 pmIf you have a current pinch hit, I'm happy to discuss extensions. However, your deadline is not automatically extended. Please contact me if you'd like more time.
Minimum requirements: An art gift must be a completed comic at least 10 pages or 40 panels long; a fic gift must be a story at least 10,000 words long. You can also fulfil a pinch hit by giving two complete half-length works, if your recipient has opted into that for the fandom(s) you are creating in. Any work must be for a fandom your recipient has requested and one character/relationship/worldbuilding tag requested in that fandom, and must avoid their DNWs.
Pinch hits can be claimed in 5k or 20-panel increments if the recipient has opted into receiving half-length works. Please say in your claim if you're claiming a pinch hit for 5k (fic) or 20 panels (comic), and for what fandom.
( Pinch hit #32 - fic - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (TV), Murder She Wrote, Jem and the Holograms (Cartoon), G.I. Joe (Cartoon), Voltron: Lion Force (1984) )
This pinch hit can be part-claimed as one story of 5,000+ words

that was weird
15 Mar 2026 08:14 pmI did get there theoretically in time to cook (which we were doing as a memorial thing because Ny did buttloads of cooking for the Fridge), but I kept getting happily lodged in conversations and/or hugs instead, so, well, it was what it was, and it was good.
(I will donate to and/or volunteer at my local Food Pantry in her honor, methinks.)
Stickers, fans, poetry, food, pictures, recipes, music, people, laughter, sadness, occasional sudden memories popping up for people. Because of someone else's story, Eggplant Caponara will now be associated with Ny for me. And when I was outside taking a people break,
I took enough fans that I can use some of them as Kid Prizes at work. (And buy some more later. The stickers aren't quite my thing; Ny gave them to small people she met in the subway and doctor's offices and so on, but I think I'll leave that as a thing to smile about about Ny, not as a Thing To Adopt.)
Saw someone from High School I literally have not seen in what, 30 years? (I mean, we read each other's journals, but it's different.) Honestly, haven't seen most of these folks in at least 15 years, because school eats my brain and then my work schedule is peculiar and family stuff is what it is, but the point is: was good. Even though I felt like I was hyper and a little off balance.
(Thanks to the Cambridge Commons co-housing folks for hosting. And thanks to the snowdrops there, too. First of the season for me!)
The Virtual Memorial, I have just learned, will be on April 12 at 1 pm Eastern, via Zoom. I assume the link will be shared on the Google announce list. (If you're not on there yet, just follow the link and explain how you know Ny to the nice friendly info-boxes.)
Also, more info on Things Ny Related, including vague but pertinent info on who her organs went to, here.

and now for something completely different
15 Mar 2026 05:01 pmSo I've been watching bits and pieces of that, as well as all of The Royal Ballet's Cinderella. I therefore offer you some fully random observations, from someone who never got into any kind of dance as a kid, and therefore knows baaaaaasically nothing about the topic. (I have been to several ballets in person, The Nutcracker of course, and the Winnipeg Ballet's Svengali..)
- I like classical ballet (I'm not really watching modern) because it's quite ridiculous, and unconnected to anything that has ever happened on the face of the Earth.
- I have learned that there's dialogue! Classical ballet has a kind of sign language, done through gestures, so that the dancers can explain plot points such as "We make evil men dance until they die!" and "This lake is made of my mother's tears!"
- There does not seem to be much point to the male principal dancers. They have thighs like birch trees, which allows them to leap impressively high in the air, but they don't spin around on nothing but their big toe, which makes them less interesting to watch. Their main purposes seems to be to move the plot along, and act as a "Ballerina holder upper."
- Maybe it's just because I'm not good enough at reading the mime, but the romantic dances are... not very romantic. They mostly seem to be the ballerina holder upper holding up the ballerina while she spins around on her big toe.
- I don't know if there's non-transphobic/misogynistic way to do the comedy roles where male dancers play female characters, but Cinderella sure didn't manage it.
- The plot of Giselle is really interesting (boy meets girl, girl dies when she finds out that boy has a fiancée, girl joins chorus of vengeful ghosts, vengeful ghosts attempt to kill boy, girl saves boy), and I wonder if there have been modern retellings like there have of other old fairytales.
- I'm pretty sure the human body is not designed to do any of that.
Which is all I have for now.
Building Neurodivergent Community
15 Mar 2026 06:58 pmAnd I learned this just in time for everyone to start fleeing Discord! But I’m going to take the lessons I have developed this knowledge into toward wherever we end up, and ask other people about their good ideas. So:

vital functions
15 Mar 2026 10:37 pmReading. I continue to work my way through the She's A Beast archives, to a degree that is not necessarily ... uh ... optimal, in terms of all the other things I want to do...
I slowed down on LIFTOFF, on account of resuming reading from the start with A, and then this evening I tripped and fell and am. More. of the way through it. again.
Finished What Is Queer Food? by John Birdsall. Ultimately the argument is that the queerness is a function of community -- the role that food plays in eating together -- though he also tries at various points for "enjoying food is queer" (among other things), which I do not think I am the target audience for. (Having said which I am now wondering what it would take to convince me of that line of reasoning, and Ideas Are Stirring. Hmm.) Overall a mixture of anecdotes from culinary history and fiction to fill in events that went unrecorded; he does hold space for people to be complex and flawed, and I appreciated the history that was actually history, but -- alas, this did not really work for me.
Writing. Words. Continue. To be. Eked out.
Watching. The 2026 Migraine World Summit is ongoing and eating a lot of my time and brain; thus far nothing has made me actually vibrate with fury and I've had a couple of useful joining-the-dots moments, so mustn't grumble there, really. And I have finally watched the talks from last year's Day 2 that I missed due to time changes, and have started transferring my digital notes from last year into my notebook...
Playing. Inkulinati: we continue Not Dead Yet in the Exploders run on Master difficulty.
Sudoku... appears to have let go of my brain for now?
Cooking. This evening I have been attempting to remember how to make Spätzle, and got there eventually (part of the difficulty being that this is the first time I've made them since acquiring a dedicated Spätzlebrett, and I needed to reestablish correct consistency of the dough...)
Eating. This morning we engaged in a Weekend Morning Ritual of going down to the local fancy bakery and getting brunch from them. We also got Treats for Afternoon Tea; I am delighted that they'll supply me with cardamom buns that I don't have to actually make myself.
I have also been Craving Brownies, but not enough to actually make them myself (and also The Oven Is Broken), and consequently have eaten them courtesy of both Wagamama (ritual Thursday night takeaway) and London Zoo (Saturday afternoon tea).
Exploring. London Zoo! Saw creatures! Maybe I will even go back and edit in more details about the creatures! Creatures: good.
Several bimbles around local front gardens (etc) to enjoy Spring Flowers.
Growing. Harvested (and consumed!) more salad. Transplanted some garlic. Wrangled some more weeding. Have yet to sow any more things but really want to have Actual Plants this growing season so, uh, maybe that can be a priority for Breaks From Migraine World Summit, not that that's worked so far...
Observing. THE BAT.
And then for brunch this morning we took our breakfast slightly further than usual to a different park bench, this one surrounded by daffodils, and then additionally wandered a little way down the New River (neither new, nor a river) to see if the coots were doing things yet (which I have also been checking every time I go to the pharmacy to pick up meds). The coots aren't, BUT there were TEN EGYPTIAN GOSLINGS peeping about the place!!! At least one of whom was Extremely keen on coming All the way down the bank and plapping along the edge of the bricks, presumably because they were warm and felt nice on feet? Certainly two very gentle attempts to chase it back towards its parents got them contemplating hissing at me, and only persuaded it to maybe do the thing for about thirty seconds at most, so I gave up on that and just stood back and watched them for a bit, and then was very relieved that the foolhardy baby did upon parents Alarm Calling (as best we can tell about A Passing Dog) go FWEEP FWEEP FWEEP all the way back up and into the bundle of its siblings. An unexpected and very welcome delight.
