I have been learning more stuff this last year and change about how I have been managing my Discord group - and apparently I DO have social instincts! They just are for operation in neurodivergent-majority environments. So it’s time to put this stuff into words, so that I can start explicitly encouraging people’s community-oriented behaviors of: appreciation for differences; tolerance for mistakes without lacking accountability; negotiation for better treatment between individuals of differing flavors; repair of relationships when things go wrong; gentle separations without acrimonious community-breaking when repair is not possible.

And I learned this just in time for everyone to start fleeing Discord! But I’m going to take the lessons I have developed this knowledge into toward wherever we end up, and ask other people about their good ideas. So:

Reading. I continue to work my way through the She's A Beast archives, to a degree that is not necessarily ... uh ... optimal, in terms of all the other things I want to do...

I slowed down on LIFTOFF, on account of resuming reading from the start with A, and then this evening I tripped and fell and am. More. of the way through it. again.

Finished What Is Queer Food? by John Birdsall. Ultimately the argument is that the queerness is a function of community -- the role that food plays in eating together -- though he also tries at various points for "enjoying food is queer" (among other things), which I do not think I am the target audience for. (Having said which I am now wondering what it would take to convince me of that line of reasoning, and Ideas Are Stirring. Hmm.) Overall a mixture of anecdotes from culinary history and fiction to fill in events that went unrecorded; he does hold space for people to be complex and flawed, and I appreciated the history that was actually history, but -- alas, this did not really work for me.

Writing. Words. Continue. To be. Eked out.

Watching. The 2026 Migraine World Summit is ongoing and eating a lot of my time and brain; thus far nothing has made me actually vibrate with fury and I've had a couple of useful joining-the-dots moments, so mustn't grumble there, really. And I have finally watched the talks from last year's Day 2 that I missed due to time changes, and have started transferring my digital notes from last year into my notebook...

Playing. Inkulinati: we continue Not Dead Yet in the Exploders run on Master difficulty.

Cooking. This evening I have been attempting to remember how to make Spätzle, and got there eventually (part of the difficulty being that this is the first time I've made them since acquiring a dedicated Spätzlebrett, and I needed to reestablish correct consistency of the dough...)

Eating. This morning we engaged in a Weekend Morning Ritual of going down to the local fancy bakery and getting brunch from them. We also got Treats for Afternoon Tea; I am delighted that they'll supply me with cardamom buns that I don't have to actually make myself.

I have also been Craving Brownies, but not enough to actually make them myself (and also The Oven Is Broken), and consequently have eaten them courtesy of both Wagamama (ritual Thursday night takeaway) and London Zoo (Saturday afternoon tea).

Exploring. London Zoo! Saw creatures! Maybe I will even go back and edit in more details about the creatures! Creatures: good.

Several bimbles around local front gardens (etc) to enjoy Spring Flowers.

Growing. Harvested (and consumed!) more salad. Transplanted some garlic. Wrangled some more weeding. Have yet to sow any more things but really want to have Actual Plants this growing season so, uh, maybe that can be a priority for Breaks From Migraine World Summit, not that that's worked so far...

And then for brunch this morning we took our breakfast slightly further than usual to a different park bench, this one surrounded by daffodils, and then additionally wandered a little way down the New River (neither new, nor a river) to see if the coots were doing things yet (which I have also been checking every time I go to the pharmacy to pick up meds). The coots aren't, BUT there were TEN EGYPTIAN GOSLINGS peeping about the place!!! At least one of whom was Extremely keen on coming All the way down the bank and plapping along the edge of the bricks, presumably because they were warm and felt nice on feet? Certainly two very gentle attempts to chase it back towards its parents got them contemplating hissing at me, and only persuaded it to maybe do the thing for about thirty seconds at most, so I gave up on that and just stood back and watched them for a bit, and then was very relieved that the foolhardy baby did upon parents Alarm Calling (as best we can tell about A Passing Dog) go FWEEP FWEEP FWEEP all the way back up and into the bundle of its siblings. An unexpected and very welcome delight.

Got up yesterday morning baked 4 loaves of soda bread (here's a picture of 2 of them), ate some myself (I kept the 4th loaf) then schlepped out ot the island to deliver them to my brother, sister, and niece.

We went out for a fun dinner - the onion rings at this place are so good! even if the service was a little haphazard - and then I went home with my brother's family. It was early enough that I could have come back here, but my middle niece was like, "aren't you going to hang out with us?!" so of course I stayed, and ended up watching KPop Demon Hunters with middle and youngest niece (youngest was like I don't wanna! but at the end she was like, that was really good!). I should note that they are 27 and 24, but they still like hanging out with me! <333 And now we want the prequel about Rumi's mother and her demon affair.

My car this morning came 90 minutes early, so I rolled out of bed expecting to be able to have a bagel and a cup of coffee before I had to leave, but there he was, blocking the driveway, so I got home before I was even scheduled to leave.

The amount of benadryl and Zyrtec I have to take at their house because of the cat is ridiculous, and I ended up coming home and sleeping for most of the day. I'm glad I didn't cancel my PTO day tomorrow though - I scheduled it when this dinner was originally planned for tonight. I did tell my boss she could ping me if she needed me ahead of their meeting with the board chair tomorrow afternoon, but I so hope she doesn't.

Note: I haven't had more than a short nap in over 36 hours. So this is going to be a really short and possibly incoherent post.

The main thing this week was my (short) trip to the US -- first solo transatlantic flight. Far easier than I'd been afraid it would be. The bank errands didn;t get run, but I got to the Wednesday grief group gathering in Third Place Commans, got my driver's license renewed (and had a nice long chat with MG from the Tuesday group, while she drove me down to the DOL in Tukwilla), and had lunch with my kids on my (79th) birthday. The sushi place was closed, but we went next door and had ramen and pork buns.

I took Lilac, and got everything done that needed to be done, but it was a struggle. Some scattered commentary below. There are links below but you'll have to dig them out yourself -- I'm going to bed. With my cats.

This is from a post made here on Facebook. I'm copying it here, with the permission of the original author, so that people off Facebook can see it.

I had the pleasure of Terry’s company on a week-long Writer’s Retreat twice, in 1990, as part of a company of eight interesting people in Diss, Suffolk.

Terry later came to my wedding and gave me a proof copy of ‘Lords and Ladies’ as a wedding gift! I had never read his books before I met him, so I began with ‘Wyrd Sisters’ - and have carried on reading them ever since.

When he learned I was meeting up with Terry again, my local Librarian shouted ‘Oook!’ and collected up every book by Terry which he had in the Library, and asked him to sign them. This amused Terry - and shocked other participants! "You shouldn't write in Library Books" etc...

Terry and I were both reading Henry Mayhew’s ‘London labour and the London poor’ at the time.

I asked Terry to make a list of other books which he found inspirational. Here they are:

Past few day have mostly been low energy days, mostly spent playing Pokopia (I’m working through the third area now and this game is just so big already it’s crazy). So far in the game I’ve learned electricity, moving water, more transform abilities and, most recently, cooking to boost abilities. There’s still move areas to unlock (I dunno how many, at least two?) but I dunno when I’ll be able to access them.

(I need to get back to requiem sometime)

Other than that I managed to fic a bit (on one day, randomly) which is at least something. I hoped to do more to it but I got sidetracked and unfocussed.

Seapeekay has announced he’s gonna be at a con in Birmingham this month which… ugh. This and next month are the worst timing for something like that (this month causa gigs) but I do wanna try and go. The schedule got announced Friday and he has two panel things one say so I’m gonna try and hit that, but we’ll see.

Yesterday I decided I was able to go and see a film so it’s film thoughts time. I pretty much only went to the cinema in town. The shopping street is partly closed off now cause refurbishment to the Center has finally started after signs being up for months. Who knows how long it’ll take or if it will be worth it. I did pick a plushie up from Asda cause it was discounted but that was it.

I went to see Hoppers and How To Make A Killing.

Minions And Monsters: this honestly looks really fun! The minions summon Cthulhu, I’m not kidding that’s a scene in the trailer and that alone has sold it on me.
Toy Story 5: short thing, dunno if I’m sold on the concept though.
Magic Faraway Tree: A new trailer, seemingly dealing with later parts of the story. I’m kinda curious about it, might see if there’s something else. (I feel there’s a lot I wanna watch these next weeks) It feels like a fun watch
Devil Wears Prada 2: I watched the first film on tv forever ago and rememebr it being ok, I don’t think I’ll see it as the trailer hasn’t sold it. Might be a ‘see if on tv’ film.
Michela: Micheal Jackson biopic, feels like it’ll be well done but I’m indifferent to biopic sin general so…eh
The Drama: seems like the story of a couple only the guy finds out something about the girl and it derails the whole thing. Again kinda indifferent about this. It feels it hinges on what the ‘thing’ is, the trailer shows reactions to it but not what it actually is. Is that wise? Who knows
Project Hail Mary: new trailer, again looks like later parts of the film and ahh the lil alien guy! I do really wanna see this.

Anyway onto the films. I could have watched them either way around (they had similar showing times with equal gaps between them), but I went with Hoppers first.

Next cinema trip might be Project Hail Mary (maybe with Ready Or Not) or if I decide to go to the Bring Me The Horizon gig they’re showing. Either way I’ll know when the listings go live.

When I got back I found out I’d missed a package but I’ve got nothing coming. All that’s due soon is the Doctor Who season 21 boxset but that’s not even marked as sent yet.

Night time was low energy. But yay qsmp started again. I didn’t see much cause I got timings wrong, but what I saw (and clips on my for you) was it’s already very gay. Which we low, we love all the yaoi both returning and new.

In the night I wasn’t gonna watch anything but ended up watching Bodycam on shudder.

Last week's bread held out admirably.

Friday night supper: ven pongal (South India khichchari).

Saturday breakfast rolls: eclectic vanilla, came out a bit more vanilla-y than usual.

Today's lunch: Norwegian halibut fillets panfried for slightly less long than suggested on packet, as I have found this in the past to be a bit of an over-estimate, served with samphire sauce, baby cauliflowers quartered and cooked thus (used lime and lemongrass vinegar for the acidulation) and La Ratte potatoes roasted in goosefat.

My right shoulder and neck started hurting Friday night, along with an ache on my right side. I tried Tylenol, which did nothing, but this morning it occurred to me that while I know naproxen doesn't help the weird neck/shoulder tension, it might help my back. I tried, and yes it helped.

Other than that, I went for a walk in the snow yesterday, after staying in all day Friday, and in the evening rysmiel, Sasha, and I watched the first half of the National Theater at Home production of _The Importance of Being Earnest_. It's very good, and we are going to watch the rest of it tonight.

Hot cross buns have reappeared at my favourite bakery in town (the time between them posting about this on their Instagram stories today, and me rushing out to the bakery to buy some was six minutes), everything is all wild garlic, all the time, and I hung my laundry on the washing line outdoors for the first time this year. All, in their way, are my personal markers of spring's return — although it began raining after lunch and I had to rush out into the garden to rescue everything before it had completely finished drying.

Yesterday I was in Cambridge for the afternoon. I went for a massage (the masseuse told me my shoulders and neck were the tensest she'd ever seen in a client), refilled my spice jars at the refill shop, and got my hair cut. My hairdresser, who is prone to belief in conspiracy theories and quackery, didn't even spout any nonsense this time around (apart from recommending black seed oil as a cure for all medical ailments), which was something of a relief.

After the haircut, I met Matthias for dinner at this restaurant, which was fantastic, and of course featured at least one dish involving wild garlic!

Today has been sleepy and slow: laundry, cups of coffee, hot cross buns, reading in the living room. For most of the morning I was following the sun around the room like a cat, basking. Now, I'm watching the rain on the windows.

Welp, I've come down with my first (hopefully only, but time will tell) cold of 2026. Last Wednesday I came home feeling unusually tired and a bit off, and Thursday woke up with a sore throat and congestion. Ditto for Friday, and I stayed home from work both days but did read and respond to emails. The cold has progressed from there and today it's entering the chest congestion/coughing phase. Hopefully that phase will also pass quickly and not linger for weeks. At least I've tested negative for COVID, so it's not that.

The timing of this illness sucks because I had Plans this weekend, namely attending 2 memorial events for old friends who died recently and the annual Old House and Barn Expo in Manchester, NH. I've heard it's a cool event, and also a guy I used to work for is the event's bookseller, and I was hoping to catch up with him in person while there.

One of my departed friends was a well-known and respected High Priestess in my local-ish community, a published author and an old tech writing colleague. She'd been fighting cancer for some time and had stopped attending various events some years ago, so I hadn't seen her in a long time or stayed in touch. I had kept up with her lightly through others, so I knew a bit about how she was doing, but hadn't known the cancer was at this stage. She was very funny, smart, generous, and spent many years supporting and nurturing connections in the local Pagan/Wiccan community.

The other friend is the one I've posted about here recently. On the bright side, because I was home sick on Friday I was able to join the livestream of MM's funeral service, which was lovely. I wish I could join today's memorial, but I'm feeling sick enough to know I need more rest, plus I don't want to risk sharing this ick with others if I can avoid it.

So, Hail the new Ancestors, and everyone else please take care!

Got him settled with the Switch, and then went back to bed and stared vacantly at my phone for an hour, before getting up to face the day.

Summary: (more notes than a summary) Contains spoilers for the Season 3 episode "McKay & Mrs. Miller". I might be taking a certain amount of liberty with the timeline; let's assume that a few months went by between "M&MM" and "Return".
This is a very image-intensive story. Illustrations and photos are all by me, aside from one or two photos taken by my husband. A couple of the postcards utilize (heavily Photoshopped) patterns that I got off the Internet to represent fabrics and such, because I didn't have anything suitable.

Reccer's Notes: This is a heartwarming epistolary story in which Teyla and Jeannie (Rodney's sister) write to each other. Eventually the other team members are brought in as well, especially John and Rodney. It's a mix of tales about Jeannie's life, and of the team's, especially Teyla's, adventures, and although the format as a series of postcard/image pages is a little awkward to negotiate, it's very much worth reading. The postcards start off somewhat formally, and quickly become more personal, and one theme is of the correspondence bringing Rodney and Jeannie closer together. It's touching, funny, tinged with the realities and sadnesses of life in the Pegasus galaxy, and an excellent read.

Oscar-nominated movies I've watched: Frankenstein, Sinners, Weapons, The Ugly Stepsister(!!!!), The Secret Agent, Marty Supreme.

After the nominations came out, I was like "Wow, I've seen so many of these!" Friends, I literally had only seen the four(!!) horror movies, but between Frankenstein and Sinners they were nominated for so many things that it felt like I knew more movies than I really did.

Snubs: I didn't see it until after the nominees were announced (and neither did anyone else, apparently), but man, Testament of Ann Lee should have been up for Best Score and Best Actress at the very least. Best Picture too tbh.

Who I'm rooting for: I want Sinners to pick up a bunch of hardware, most of all Best Picture, but also Delroy Lindo for Best Supporting Actor, Wunmi Mosaku for Best Supporting Actress, Best Score, and Best Original Screenplay. My second choice in any category where they're going head to head would be Marty Supreme, and Chalamet is probably my pick for Best Actor.

My favorite story of these awards: The Ugly Stepsister, a Norwegian-language horror film, getting nominated for Best Hair and Makeup. There's no way it's going to win, but how did it even get nominated?! I hope the nomination got some more eyes on it, especially since it pairs so well with The Substance, which was nominated last year.

Rotten tomatoes: Frankenstein just wasn't all that. It was long, obvious, and self-important, and I hated the design of the Creature, which was basically just body paint and bad hair. I wouldn't mind it winning for something like Production Design or Costuming, and but that's about it. Props to Elordi for snagging an acting nom, though.

And take this one with a grain of salt, because I haven't watched it, but every Black person whose review I've come across haaaaaaated One Battle After Another. I think FD Signifier has put out three different videos or streams at this point about how much he hated the treatment of Black women in it. I was already primed to skip it because I disliked the trailer; in particular, the father/daughter bickering about pronouns for her nonbinary friend really hit me the wrong way. So I personally am rooting for any movie but that one in every category (esp against Sean Penn for Best Supporting Actor, because fuck that dude).

The moment she heard the crash, Dinah was on her feet and moving, uncaring what had been broken as long as it wasn't that little girl who had stolen her heart. She skidded into the kitchen before Lian had made her escape from the counter, the drawers askew to let Dinah know how the girl had gotten up there on it. She was beside the refrigerator, from which the ceramic cookie jar in the shape of a coyote had tumbled to the floor.

The cookie jar was not salvageable. Lian's face was a picture of contriteness, and Dinah just moved to get her down.

"You sit on right here, Dart," Dinah said, depositing her on the kitchen table which was at least lower than the counter. "Until I get the pieces swept up, the floor is lava and you don't have firefighter boots!"

"Didn't mean to break Mąʼii."

"I know, sweetie. And you did a lot of problem solving to figure out how to get it while I was on the phone. But next time, you should ask, and I can help." Dinah found the broom and a bucket, picking up the larger pieces before sweeping up the rest of the debris. She's need to get a box or a large jug to put the shards in, but for now, she just wanted it off the floor.

"Okay, so I need to find a new cookie jar, and we're going to need new cookies," Dinah said. "Ready to go shopping?"

"Yes!"

Dinah reached for the girl, picking her up and settling her on a hip, even if Lian was a little big for that, especially for her shortness. She hugged Lian tight, glad nothing had been hurt on her.

"You do have to tell your daddy you're sorry."

"Will do!"

Yesterday I discovered the Seed Library Network. I was delighted to find one near me.

Today we visited the Urbana Free Library Seed Exchange. It's on the second floor. We rode the elevator up, and the display was big enough to be seen from where the elevator lets out. Seeds are stored in drawers, sorted by type. There are sections for flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Some of the really popular ones have their own drawer; others are grouped together. Unopened packets of commercial seed are filed as they are, for folks who want to know exactly what they're getting. Opened packets or homegrown seeds are put in envelopes by library staff. With wildflower and landrace seeds, especially mixes, you may get more surprises.

Last week the temperature here went up to 18 degrees. All the snow melted. Then the next day it rained heavily, pretty much the whole day. Then the next day it snowed.

I looked out the back window at one point and realized the drainage ditch was completely full of water. Like an inch from overflowing. The opening to the pipe from the sump pump was completely submerged. Now that the snow has melted I can open my back door again so I went to have a look, and the walls I had built up with broken concrete had collapsed and there had been several clay landslides into the ditch.

I should have expected that really. Lesson learned. I have some pea gravel I had intended to dump on the top, now I realize I should have been using it to fill in the gaps between the larger rocks, both to give them support and to try to keep the silt from settling in the cracks. When the soil is dryer I'll dig it out and re-do it properly. Fortunately Facething Marketplace has tons of people giving away left over rocks from their landscaping projects because I'm mostly out.

On the plus side, the drainage ditch did operate entirely as intended in that there was no flooding of the rest of the yard. The basement stayed bone dry and the pump didn't get any backwash.

Saw a rat back behind the shed while I was out there. I kind of figure rats are like the coyotes, they're always there, just sometimes we also see them.

Still. He was a big fucker.

Left the house today to go to a seed swap that was happening a couple of blocks away. Didn't swap any seeds but I did have a lovely conversation with a man from a local group that runs workshops on things like pollinator gardens and composting. There were also some people there from the Anishnawbe food & medicine garden.

I remember walking past a storefront on my way to the gf's place last week and passing what used to be a big art supply store. It's been divided in half, part of it is now a medspa and the other half is a thrift store.

That kind of encapsulates the current state of the neighbourhood perfectly, we have condos and gentrification and chic designer stores. But we also have the Community Centre with the needle exchange program and the lawyers who will give you advice about your immigration case or your lawsuit against your landlord. The slumlords who own the highrise behind me lost an attempt to shut down a food bank that was started in a couple of empty units by the tenants. There are signs on every light pole supporting the latest rent strike against yet another slum lord.

There's also a goth/industrial club right at the end of my street, and do you think I've managed to drop in there even once? No I have not. Maybe when it warms up and the wastewater numbers are less dire. I know about a half-dozen DJs who hold nights there, so I should get one of those straw holder thingys you can fix to your mask.

Actually, now that I think about it, that would be a good idea for the days I have to go into the office and it's too cold to eat outside.

Finally got around to reading the What If…? book that has Moon Knight in it.

It’s good!

Age of MoonKnight over on Tumblr did a chapter-by-chapter liveblog, which I enjoyed. Check that out if you want a more beat-by-beat coverage of the plot (and lots of quotes). This is more of an overall post-game reflection.

Some short, spoiler-free reactions:

Based on the title, I expected “a canon-divergence AU where Marc meets Venom instead of Khonshu.” Instead, it starts in a universe that’s pretty close to 616, Khonshu and all. That gets crashed by an AU Marc who did get Venom’d…but it’s not a long-term divergence for him either, it basically happened that day. So, not the story I expected to see, but it’s good at being the story it wanted to tell
Jake and Steven get a very satisfying amount of page time. Haven’t counted, but I bet there’s a similar amount of chapters for all 4 POV characters (Local Marc, Import Steven, Import Jake, and Venom)
There are lots of fun deep-cut references to all kinds of random comics stuff. You can tell the author had a good time finding things to add in, and asking their MK-fan friends for suggestions
The author has good takes on Marlene! It’s one of their breakup eras, she helps out when the plot demands it and clearly still loves them, but she’s sticking to her boundaries and Marc is wistfully respectful about it
There’s an ongoing plot through all the What If…? books, which I mostly wasn’t interested in. Very authentic to the experience of “reading a Moon Knight tie-in with a Comics Event”

Longer, full-of-spoilers analysis and reaction follows.

( Two big things I look for in a Moon Knight installment are “making clear that Steven and Jake are just as valid/important/worthwhile as Marc” and “good takes on Marlene (or whoever else the love interest is)”. This nails it on both counts )

Happy Saturday!

I'm going to be doing a little maintenance today. It will likely cause a tiny interruption of service (specifically for www.dreamwidth.org) on the order of 2-3 minutes while some settings propagate. If you're on a journal page, that should still work throughout!

If it doesn't work, the rollback plan is pretty quick, I'm just toggling a setting on how traffic gets to the site. I'll update this post if something goes wrong, but don't anticipate any interruption to be longer than 10 minutes even in a rollback situation.

The Premise

What's special about this exchange? In this multifandom exchange, fandoms are only eligible if they can be read/watched/played in under 8 hours. You can request and even offer these easy, bite-sized fandoms even if you aren't familiar with them yet, and pick up the fandom over the course of the exchange. Or, take this opportunity to share and create for your favorite bite-sized fandom you're already familiar with, whether it's a movie, standalone novel, music video, commercial, song, painting, or something else!

Eligibility

To be eligible, it must be possible to experience a fandom in 8 or fewer hours. Here is how to determine if a fandom is eligible:

For Movies, TV, Podcasts, Cartoons, Music Videos, and other timed fandoms: total runtime of all seasons/films in the main fandom should be 8 or fewer hours.
For Books & Literature, internet posts, memes, and other written fandoms: total length should be at most 500 book pages or 125,000 words.
For Comics, Manga, Graphic Novels, Webcomics, and other sequential image panel fandoms: it should be readable in 8 hours, which means it varies depending on format. Generally, the total length should be no more than 8 manga volumes/comic trades, or 45 manga chapters/comic issues, or 1,000 fast-to-read paneled pages, or 500 full-size, text-heavy paneled pages.
For Video Games, Board Games, Visual Novels, and other interactive media fandoms: total time for a complete playthrough that imparts significant canon knowledge should be 8 or fewer hours, as shown on howlongtobeat or demonstrated by a non-speedrun “let’s play” style video on YouTube.
For Visual Art, Photographs, Sculpture, and other non-written, non-interactive, non-timed fandoms: approved as long as apprehending the entire work takes 8 or fewer hours.
For Historical or Media/Actor RPF: an evidence post comment on a per-character or per-ship basis showing that the relevant media, documentary film, biography, and wikipedia/fanlore/fandom wiki pages can be read and/or watched within eight hours. This post should be linked in sign-up request details so that participants will know where to find canon.
For RPF not tied to historical figures or specific media: these will be approved on a case-by-case basis if it can be demonstrated in an evidence post comment that all relevant material is easy to find and can be consumed within 8 hours. This post should be linked in sign-up request details so that participants will know where to find canon.
For Crossover pairings: canon length is determined by the combined canon length of the two fandoms.
Anything not covered above: will be approved on a case-by-case basis: make a comment in the evidence post!

Individual stories in anthologies count as their own fandoms. Examples include a season of True Detective, an episode of Black Mirror, or an episode of a non-serial competition-style TV show.

Exceptions will also be made for single books, movies, etc that, while technically part of a larger series, are sufficiently distinct from the greater series and can stand on their own, on a case-by-case basis.

What are the requirements for participating?

You must have an Ao3 account and be at least 18 years old to participate. When you sign up, you are committing to creating a fanfic of 1,000 words or more for your recipient during the writing period.

Nominations:

During the nominations period, you will be able to submit your nominations to the tag set. Each participant can nominate up to 8 fandoms with a maximum of 8 relationships for each fandom. Relationships and characters should be disambiguated by fandom for clarity. Single characters should be nominated as “Solo: Character Name” in the Relationships field. Romantic relationships should be indicated with a / and platonic ones with a &.

Sign-Ups:

Your sign-up must request at least three different fandoms up to a maximum of ten. Fandoms must be unique, i.e. if you have ten requests they must be for ten different fandoms. There are two freeform tags used to specify medium preferences: Medium Opt-In: Fic, and Medium Opt-In: Art. You must select at least one medium, but you can select both if you are happy to receive either art or fic. You must select at least one pairing or ‘Any Relationship’ per request. You may sign up with a maximum of one well-behaved sock; please ensure that your sock is not matchable to your main account.

Please be courteous to other participants. We will not entertain asshole behavior.

DNWs must be listed in the Optional Details text box to be enforced—we cannot enforce DNWs that are only listed in an external letter.

In your sign-up, you should offer at least four unique fandoms. They can be the same fandoms as those you request. Before the end of the sign-up period, please check to make sure that you are matchable. It's fine if no one is offering the fandoms you're requesting (we'll take care of that with a pinch hit if necessary), but you should make sure that your offers are matchable to at least one person so that you have something to create.

Matching:

This exchange uses OR matching. Your assignment only needs to include one of your recipient’s fandoms and one of their relationships. Recipients can mention additional pairings besides those in the tag set, but inclusion of these pairings will not be enforced.

If there is anyone you do not want to be matched to, please contact the mods via Dreamwidth or email at bitesizedfandomsex@gmail.com and let us know their username and how you’d like us to handle it if they ask to pick up your pinch hit or write you a treat.

Assignments:

You must complete a story of at least 1,000 words OR 1 finished art piece minimum.

Your assignment should be in a requested fandom and include at least one requested relationship/character. It should also be in one of your recipient's requested mediums (i.e., if your recipient only requested fic, you cannot fill their request with art). You only have to submit one assignment based on one of your recipient's requests, not all of them! You are not required to fill the request that you matched on if another one of their requests catches your eye. For example, it's fine if you match on your recipient's request for Genghis Khan - Miike Snow (Music Video) but decide you'd rather go with their Tetris (Video Games) prompt.

You are not required to follow the recipient’s exact suggestions or prompts, but you should respect your recipient’s DNWs. Please don't submit spitefic, we know it when we see it.

Art pieces should be finished and of a quality that you would be happy to receive yourself. Scanned traditional art should be on unlined paper with a clean background.

The use of LLM or other AI tools to generate works is not allowed.

Please remain anonymous until creator reveals. Please refrain from discussing which work you created, placing your work in a personal series/collection with other, revealed works, or including other identifying information while works are anonymous. You are free to do this after creator reveals!

Treats:

Treats do not need to meet the minimum length requirements, but should feature a requested medium, fandom and relationship (unless the recipient has stated it's fine to do otherwise). Please follow the recipient's DNWs.

The first time Gideon fell asleep in front of the toilet we moved him to a comfy chair. From where he woke up still feeling sick and Jane found him lying on the floor with a bucket he'd found and relocated him back to the toilet, where he then fell asleep again.

I missed all of this because I had passed out in bed feeling rubbish. I did wake up to various noises, but each time I did I tried to open my eyelids, failed, and fell back to sleep again. Thankfully Jane isn't feeling as bad as me, and Sophia was off having a play date at the other end of the street.

So far nobody has actually thrown up. Fingers crossed that continues.

Marty Supreme (2025). A sleezy little punk in the 50s exploits everyone he knows or can finagle a meeting with in order to pursue his dream of becoming the world's best ping pong player.

I reeeeeally went back and forth on whether I wanted to see this, because everyone was like "Did you like Uncut Gems, the two-hour anxiety attack? It's like Uncut Gems." In general, I would not describe entertainment that makes me anxious to be a big draw! (I'm not talking about horror, that's TOTALLY DIFFERENT lol.) This is why I will never watch The Bear or The Pitt! But I finally got myself to go to a pre-Oscar showing of this because I enjoy Timothee Chalamet a lot, and I had a good time.

This movie is a RIDE. I have a pretty severe embarassment squick, but weirdly this rarely hit it. I only had to hide under my blanket in the theater maybe twice. Marty is just the worst but in a trainwreck way, so there's this sense that it doesn't really matter what he does or what happens to him, because it'll be engaging, not least because Chalamet is phenomenal. One of the low-key funniest lines is mid-movie when his uncle who owns a shoe story tells him that he's a fantastic shoe salesman. No shit, of course he is! It also helps that this is more of a black comedy than a ~drama, and while sometimes plot developments are the natural consequences of Marty's actions, other times they're utterly batshit that no reasonable person could have predicted.

CW for an ongoing stressful situation with a dog, but as far as I understand its last appearance, the dog is fine, unlike pretty much everyone else Marty so much as speaks to in this entire movie.

In conclusion, this is very much not a movie for everyone, but I had fun.

Goodness knows, some real weirdness is revealed in You Be the Judge in Guardian Saturday, but today's produces a theory which is entirely new to me -

But apart from all this hoohah about HYGIENE, I am rather taken with New Health Scare Theory:

Boiling water twice is a no-no for me – there is a change in quality and taste. My life had a certain drabness to it – I now attribute that to consuming poor-quality water for so long without realising.

This could be a whole new thing, couldn't it? Once-boiled water for vitality!

I was going to ask are they living in a log cabin or what in Ohio if the kitchen is so freezingly cold in the mornings they have to warm up the mugs so that they do not immediately chill the coffee but I see the issue is poor insulation.

Maybe they should do something about insulation rather than bicker over 'secondhand water'?

I have worked. Uh. A lot. Over the past three weeks. o_o But now it's the weekend, and I don't currently have a rewrite to work on, and March Break lies ahead; the spring crunch isn't finished, but it's on hiatus for the week, and a normal workweek is a breath of fresh air at this point. (Also I'm taking a couple of days off during it.)

Yesterday work wrapped up early enough that I had an actual evening, so I was finally able to start Butterfly Effects, the fifteenth (!) InCryptid book. ("Finally" is a bit of a stretch, I guess, since it's still the release week, but this is a Sarah-narrated book. Mostly. SARAH.)

So my hopes for the weekend are pretty much: avoid napping (I don't find naps restorative and feel groggier after than before I started); finish reading Butterfly Effects; watch this week's The Pitt and hopefully the temporarily-streaming production of The Importance of Being Earnest with

scruloose; get

scruloose to redo my undercut; and (also with

scruloose) do a second round of advance-prepping ten or so bags of the dry ingredients for my breakfast banana bread while also baking up a new batch of loaves. I think that last will also require decanting cinnamons from bags into jars, so maybe we'll manage a bit of other spice decanting/sorting while we're at it.
