Definitely not up everyone's alley, especially right now (it's about a zombie pandemic), but the movie version of The Girl With All the Gifts is now streaming on Netflix. I usually hate zombies as a genre (there are three exceptions so far), but the audiobook of the novel by M. R. Carey is one of the best audiobooks I've ever heard. The movie screenplay was written by M. R. Carey simultaneously with the book.
I don't like the movie as much as the audiobook, but I'm glad I watched it; it's a worthy effort.
Content warnings, including for a couple of brief animal death scenes, are here: https://www.doesthedogdie.com/media/12732
The actress playing Melanie (the child protagonist), Sennia Nanua, was 12-14 when the movie was made.
Dominique Tipper, who plays Naomi Nagata on The Expanse has a small role.
Glenn Close does a great job playing Dr. Caldwell. She's more sympathetic in the film than in the book.
I love the droney music in the movie soundtrack.
The visuals in the first couple of minutes of the credits, and the music throughout the credits, are worth the whole price of admission.
Trivia (swiped from IMDB):
Some of the aerial footage was shot by a second unit in the ghost town of Pripyat, near Chernobyl, in Ukraine
Glenn Close's sister-in-law, Deb Close, is a massive fan of zombie films....the first thing Glenn did after accepting her role was call to let Deb know she was in a zombie film
About differences between film & book, Carey stated:
“We went a slightly different way in the movie, especially when it came to point of view. Where the novel moves between the five main characters and lets us see what’s going on in all of their heads, the movie sticks with Melanie.“
