Fandom-specific Prompts
Allerleirauh | All-Kinds-Of-Fur (Fairy Tale)
- Source: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Grimm%27s_Household_Tales,_Volume_1/Allerleirauh
- Thoughts:
- The part of this story where the king wants to marry his daughter fascinates me. Parent/child incest is a DNW, but it's absolutely OK with me if the king thinks twice about marrying her and instead takes the more "reasonable" course of talking his son(s) into taking her and getting off on the result.
- Maybe the fur mantle gives her special powers or wisdom, since it comes from every animal in her father's kingdom. Or maybe it transforms her personality somehow.
- I love her ambivalence toward the king she ends up in the household of after running away. She keeps doing all these things to make him notice her, but when he does, she runs away and disguises herself as a kitchen maid again. What's that about?
Cupid & Psyche - Apuleius
- Source: https://www.pitt.edu/~dash/cupid.html
- Thoughts:
- My favorite part of this story is from the beginning of their relationship to the point where Cupid leaves her.
- Smut in the dark!
- I imagine her trying various tricks in order to see him, or asking him for hints, only to be thwarted by him, and possibly punished. (I like it better if she is tempted like this on her own, rather than being manipulated by her sisters into doing it.)
- Something from Cupid's point of view would be interesting. What is it like for him to be enchanted by his own arrow? Does he know she's not entirely happy? Does he try to figure out how to fix that? Does he fear that she will break her promise not to try to see him?
- My favorite part of this story is from the beginning of their relationship to the point where Cupid leaves her.
The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry
- Sources:
- https://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/eng/child/ch113.htm
- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Silkie_of_Sule_Skerry#Orkney_version
- This isn't an official source, but I am esp. fond of the version performed by Jean Redpath (she calls it "The Grey Silkie"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xri4piabTWg.
- How did the woman meet the silkie? What was their relationship like to begin with? Was it, as Ian Giles suggests, "A strange half-man/half-seal comes ashore once a year, makes fast and loose with the local maidens, then promptly does a runner leaving the lasses undone"? Or was it something more meaningful to him?
- I'm into sexy human/seal shapeshifter shenanigans (say that five times fast). Does he seduce her while she's swimming or sunbathing? Or does he take on a fully human form and come to land? Or does she seduce him? Consensual, dubcon, or noncon OK.
- What if one or more of the characters were to make different choices? (The woman agrees to marry the silkie in the first part? The silkie agrees to marry the woman in the second part? The gunner doesn’t shoot the silkie and the son?)
- What is the story of the silkie himself? Or silkies in general? Do they all seek out humans to bear their children? If not, why does he?
Nattergalen | The Nightingale - Hans Christian Andersen
- Source: https://andersen.sdu.dk/vaerk/hersholt/TheNightingale_e.html
- Fandom-specific DNW: Heavy focus on Christianity.
- Thoughts:
- This story is told outside the characters' heads and I would love a version of it (or part of it) that gets at the feelings and motivations of one or more characters. The kitchen girl? The King? (Why does he prefer the artificial nightingale, while it exists?) The nightingale? How does it feel to him, being accepted and then forgotten? Why does he come back?
- Supposedly this story was "inspired by the author's unrequited love for opera singer Jenny Lind, the 'Swedish nightingale'." I'd be interested in a mashup of the fairy tale and the real-life story. Who is the Nightingale? Who is the King? Who is the kitchen girl? Who is the artificial nightingale?
- An AU where the Nightingale is human would work for me.
Orpheus & Euridice
- Sources:
- https://ovid.lib.virginia.edu/trans/Metamorph10.htm (Story of Orpheus's attempt to rescue Euridice, and his grieving afterward)
- https://ovid.lib.virginia.edu/trans/Metamorph11.htm (Story of the death of Orpheus at the hands of the Maenads)
- Something that focuses on Orpheus's outsider status. (He never seems completely here or there. He can pass easily into Hades with the power of his music, but he can't bring Euridice back to Earth, and he doesn't seem to completely make it back himself. Does he welcome death at the hands of the Maenads?)
- Something from Euridice's point of view. What does she think of it all? What is it like for her to be in love with Orpheus? Does she have an inkling of her fate? What is it like for her to die the second time? What is it like for her to see Orpheus again when he descends?
- Bonus points if you work in this bit from The Metamorphoses (End of Bk X:1-85): "Orpheus had abstained from the love of women....Indeed, he was the first of the Thracian people to transfer his love to young boys, and enjoy their brief springtime, and early flowering, this side of manhood." Hm, how come that didn't make its way into my Latin class?
