Art likes
I am essentially a complete idiot about art. However, I am a fairly easy-to-please idiot. I like many art styles. I like art of physical interactions between characters (struggling or cuddling or fierce or tender or sexy or smutty), but they don't have to be doing romantic/sexy things to count as being in a romantic/sexual relationship.
Opt-ins
These often appear in DNW lists. They aren't things I actively seek out but I am fine with them.- A/B/O
- Epidemic, illness, pandemic (exception: Covid-19)
- Major character death or injury
- Readerfic
- Setting-change AUs
- Underage sex (down to age 15); adult/underage sex
DNWs and dislikes
If my signup contradicts these, please use what's in the signup.
Please don't include:
- Body shaming, fat hate, deliberate weight change
- Hopeless endings (hopeless beginnings and middles are fine, ambiguous endings are fine)
- Children under 15 having sex (OK to mention as part of a character's background)
- Nonsentient animal suffering (OK to mention briefly)
- Emetophilia (vomit OK in nonsexual context)
- Stuffing kink, if it's done by humans to other humans (monsters, deities doing it is OK)
- Racism of humans against other humans (exception: magical or superpowered humans)
- Scat
These are OK in the background but I'd rather the story not focus on them:
- Children under 15
- Domesticity, curtainfic involving human heterosexual couples
- Homophobia (OK to briefly include period-typical attitudes, temporary internal ambivalence)
- Infidelity, monogamy, polyamory negotiations (characters being either monogamous or polyamorous are fine, I just don't want talking about relationship style to be a big deal in the story)
- Human women bearing/birthing human offspring
Fandom-specific Notes & Prompts
Fandom-specific notes & prompts are entirely optional; take or leave, mix and match as you please.
A Thousand Kisses Deep - Leonard Cohen (Song) (fic or art)
- Link (YouTube, etc): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7aJTb0OBrs
- Lyrics link: https://genius.com/Leonard-cohen-a-thousand-kisses-deep-lyrics
Thoughts:
This song makes me think of sexuality and touching as an expression of love, but not so much romantic love. More the kind of love expressed by Charles Bukowski in this quote: "We're all going to die, all of us, what a circus! That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't." ("The Captain is Out to Lunch and the Sailors have taken over the Ship") A love that comes out of shared humanity, shared embodiment, being a species that makes social and personal bonds, and how we try to shield ourselves from the emptiness and apathy of the universe through those things.
According to the Genius Lyrics link, Leonard Cohen had this to say about the song:
"You live your life as if it's real." Even though the dreamy aspect of it begins to prevail, and the sense of having no control begins to be apparent. The evidence accumulates that you're not running the show. You still have to make choices as if you were running the show. But you make your choices with the intuitive understanding that it's unfolding as it must.
Cohen also uses the line "Back on Boogie Street" in another song on the same album. Between the two songs, to my mind, the line "Back on Boogie Street" refers to being reincarnated.
There is so much imagery in these lyrics to draw from for a story--gambling, sex work and drugs, oceans and shipwreck.
Art incorporating the ocean/shipwreck imagery or giving me what you think Boogie Street looks like would be especially welcome. (I also love art portraying physical affection, smutty or not.)
I first heard this song in the film A Good Thief (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good_Thief_(film)). You're welcome to include elements from the film in your story. (But I haven't seen the film A Thousand Kisses Deep.)
Dance With the Devil - Prince (Song) (fic or art)
- Link (YouTube, etc): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udVFCpg5OnU
- Lyrics link: https://genius.com/Prince-dance-with-the-devil-lyrics (Content note: death, violent imagery)
Thoughts:
Now that I look at them side by side, I'm struck by background similarities in the lyrics between "A Thousand Kisses Deep" (see above) and "Dance With the Devil," even though on the surface the moods of the songs are different. They can both be seen to be about surrender, but in different ways.
I like the way death imagery and romantic imagery blend in this song.
One way to avoid a hopeless ending in a story for this song would be perspective flip. So, the Devil and/or the Joker could be the one(s) to get a hopeful ending.
I'd love to see art of the dance.
I understand Prince wrote this song for the 1989 film Batman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_(1989_film)), and then decided the song was too dark for the movie. You're welcome to include elements from the movie in your story.
Jolene - Dolly Parton (Song) (fic or art)
- Link (YouTube, etc): https://youtu.be/Ixrje2rXLMA
- Lyrics link: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/dollyparton/jolene141885.html
Thoughts:
What is this song really about? In one sense, it's about being at the mercy of someone who has more power than you (where power comes in the form of beauty, charm, seductiveness). In another sense, it's about misunderstanding the problem. Jolene can't take the narrator's man without the man's consent. But he is already besotted with Jolene. So is the plea not only directed at the wrong person but also too late? Let's say Jolene hears the narrator's plea and rejects the man. Does that spell happiness for the couple? Or are they settling for each other in a way that will turn out badly for them?
Another take: Maybe Jolene is supernatural in some way and people can't help but fall for her. The way the narrator sings about her, she might well be besotted herself. Maybe "please don't take my man" means "take me, instead." How does that change the potential outcomes?
Lil Nas X, a gay, Black pop star, also does a haunting rendition of this song: https://youtu.be/RWjnC8HSRdU -- I'm fascinated by how casting him as the narrator changes the way the lyrics hit me. If you're so inclined, I'd be interested in a story that had the two narrators interacting somehow.
No Time to Die - Billie Eilish (song) (fic or art)
- Link (YouTube, etc): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB_S2qFh5lU
- Lyrics link: https://genius.com/Billie-eilish-no-time-to-die-lyrics
This is the theme song for Daniel Craig's final James Bond movie. I'm very OK with a spy story, Bond-based or not.
Or a story of love and doubt and grieving and possibly revenge in some other setting (is it "death or paradise?" Heaven or Hell? Mt. Olympus or Hades? -- I can see the song leading into a Hades/Persephone-type story or an Orpheus-type story, especially given the death theme.
Perhaps the betraying lover is a trickster. Do they betray out of a desire to gain, or are they like the scorpion who stings because that's its nature?
Or is the apparent betrayal a misunderstanding?
What's He Building? - Tom Waits (song) (fic or art)
- Link (YouTube, etc): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAkZT_4vL_Y
- Lyrics link: https://genius.com/Tom-waits-whats-he-building-lyrics
From the Genius Lyrics page: "Waits has said that the song is inspired by those little inconsistencies that make you think," and "we put all those things together and we make up a story about someone that bears no resemblance to the truth." I imagine a story that includes the neighbors' paranoid speculations and also the truth of what's happening--which might be less or more weird than the speculations. Or an escalation to a confrontation between the neighbors and the builder. Maybe something with more than one point of view -- the speculator's and the builders. Or what does a bystander who's listening to the neighbors' gossip think?
Tightrope - Janelle Monae (video) (fic or art)
- Link (YouTube, etc): <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwnefuakcbc"> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwnefUaKCbc
- Lyrics link: https://genius.com/Janelle-monae-tightrope-lyrics
Thiswas nominated as a video...if you prefer to base your story around the lyrics, that's fine too, but I don't have specific prompts for the lyrics. The lyrics are about dealing with people who envy you and try to cut you down. The video starts with this title card: The Palace of the Dogs - Asylum - Dancing has long been forbidden for its subversive effects on the residents and its tendency to lead to illegal magical practices. I'm really interested to know something about the backstory. How do people end up in the Asylum? Who are the residents, and who are the staff, and why does a person end up being one or the other? What are the magical practices and why are they illegal? Who are the beings in robes with mirrors for faces? What is Janelle's character going to do at the end when she ends up in her room?
