It scares me a lot that he actually admits it - if the people involved had any concern about appeasing the public, they would at least have pretended to find weapons. That they didn't bother to pretend means either that they think the public doesn't care, or that they don't care whether the public cares.
I've heard a lot of people say things that boil down to "the end justifies the means," so I guess the public mostly doesn't care.
I don't like living in interesting times, dammit.
