on affirmations thru advertising, and annoying trivia brains

(inspired by a comment I made in janetmiles's journal)

I have a collage on my wall that's made out of advertising slogans. I made it in 1978. Although I didn't intend this when I made it, it works as a set of affirmations - some of them are even size positive.







The annoying trivia brain part: There are no brand names in the collage, but I know what ads some of the slogans are from because I associate the typeface with the brand name. It really pisses me off that my brain stores this information in preference to, e.g., the Japanese particles it refuses to remember.

And yeah, I'm with you on the stuff stuck in the brain. I've got thousands of song lyrics in my head...I can sing along with things I haven't heard in over a decade. Which is why I usually have to stop and think to remember my phone number. *Grin*

The two I recognize (one from slogan, one from typeface) are cigarettes. How sad is that, when I've smoked a total of three times in my life?

My memory uses rhythm and meter. This is handy as a singer. However, it also means that the entire huge hardcover book of dirty limericks I found in my dad's den as a child is all still stored in here when I could use the hard drive space for something much more useful, I am sure.

It even had Star Trek limericks in it.

The one I particularly recognize from typeface is a brand of liquor that I've never imbibed.

I think the "You've come a long way, baby." is the only one I recognize, but your having gone through the selecting and cutting out process for each one would have really rubbed them in, I think.

I sometimes see "shocking" figures about how people can identify tons of corporate logos but almost no plants, but alas, corporate logos, ads, etc. have their names all over the place (and in your face) in a way that plants do not.
