Atropos
"It is astonishing," said the biographer,
as the books burned, the paper
curled in on itself and crackled,
the red flame thrust aside
the blackness of a February night.
Chopped up furniture next fed
the bonfire - then the photographs, which stank.
"Detritus of a life
now finished." She shut her notebook,
walked away, stowing a pen in her coat
pocket. She walked, her shadow stretched long
by the street lamp.
