A while back at the Fat Women's Swim in Albany, California I met Liz Nickels, a scuba diver and instructor who organizes scuba-diving (learning and doing) trips in Maui for fat women and friends.

Her next trip is April 19-25, 2008, and it's not too late to sign up.

I'm not going this year, but maybe someday!

One caution. A dear friend of mine had always wanted to try scuba diving and was given a trial lesson by her husband. As a fat woman, she had always floated and she completely freaked out over the experience of sinking.

That isn't a reason not to try but something to be aware of. I think if she had expected it, she would have handled the experience better.

Even when I was skinny, I floated. I never finished my last YMCA swim class because it took me too long to swim underwater across the pool -- I couldn't just swim, I had to dive with each stroke to stay under the water! It would be neat to see about sinking! Not that I can afford this.

sounds nifty indeed! i wonder whether they rent wetsuits that fit. i've always wanted to go swimming with the salmon up here, but wet suits were already a problem for me when i was less fat during my active canoeing days. and buying a custom-fit one is too expensive, considering how little i'd use it, and how much i can change size.

i really like the tone of the organizer; she sounds like a good sort.

ah, i see she addresses the wetsuit issue in the FAQ.

[jaw drop]

A few years ago I got so excited by scuba that I started taking lessons. Money issues intervened, and I have been missing it and pining away.

Thank you thank you for the pointer toward a new inspiration.

(and I loved the experience of sinking -- at last, swimming swimming swimming)

I've just been feeling pretty good about organizing diving in Cambodia. The Dive group is GREAT - I explained to them that I was living in a large body - even sent my measurements and they've been awesome - they've made sure they have a bcd for me - and they've said that even if the wetsuits don't fit - it's so warm there it won't matter! :) They told me there is no reason for large people not to dive. I will let you know how it goes! I'm looking forward to sinking heh.

I'll bet Rosie or Ellen could organize a cheaper one here. Just a thought.
