If you'll forgive me for promulgating something snarky directed at Yes on Prop 8:

http://www.protectrighthandedness.com/take_action.html
The proposition places into the California Constitution the obvious will of the vast majority of Californians who are right-handed. It is simple and straightforward. It contains just 9 words (counting a hyphenated word as one) that are embraced by all moral Californians: 'Only right-hand dominance is valid and recognized in California.'

The most interesting thing there is the "feedback". You've got people thanking them for the parody. You've got people playing along with the parody, either in support or opposition, but clearly getting the joke (co-opting the language of either side in the Prop 8 debate.)

And then you've got people who DON'T get the joke. Like you always do with these things. But there are some there who actually sound defensive about it.

Because . . . we are defensive about it. We lefties ARE just a bit sensitive about being different. Look at the people posting long lists of famous successful left-handers. Why would anyone KNOW that sort of thing?

Because we actually feel weird about being lefties, and want the reassurance.

Thing is, I've never run across any hassle for being left handed.

Whiteboards and fountain pens, however, have it in for me.

See, I do well with whiteboards and fountain pens. My wife, however, who is a righty, has trouble.

SHE writes with a "hook" -- her hand hooked around. And her mother, also a righty, has backslanted handwriting.

Me, I write WITHOUT a hook, and am a lefty.

It's weird all around, I guess.

I'm right-handed and write with a hook, but not enough of one to smear the ink. My sister is left-handed and does not write with a hook; she hates those wet-ink ballpoints I love so much, because she smears the ink as she writes. I don't know that she ever felt hassled about being left-handed (probably, she felt special for it) but I think she hated scissors with a passion (except our grandmother's special lefties) until she learned to use them right-handed.

All of which has very little to do with the parody, which I found pretty amusing.

And we ambidextrous folk feel ostracized by both camps.

You're lucky enough to live in the modern era. Kids a few years older than me suffered for being southpaws (http://www.lefthander.com/hello.htm), and so did kids my age or younger who went to Catholic schools in my area.

I'm clumsy with both hands, myself.

Yeah, I've heard tales about the weird-ass reaction to that. Lots of tinplate classroom tyrants running around smacking hands with rulers.

Wow...there are a lot of nonexistent "bisexuals", then, aren't there? ;)

BTW: this site rocks. FTW. Must repost (if permitted).
