Social pressure probably works more effectively on people whose needs aren't being met and/or are unhappy about themselves somehow, because the implicit reward that social pressure offers is affection and approval (and that those things will be withdrawn if you don't comply).

I miss the big family holidays, that is, I miss the good parts. I'm still a few years away from recreating them with my own family (this year's Thanksgiving was the first step in that direction), and I don't have the kind of friends who would celebrate with me--they've all got family they prefer to spend that time with.
