I'm not anybody's leader, but that's the quote I thought of when a bunch of people I know suddenly connected with me on Diaspora.

This is me on Diaspora: https://joindiaspora.com/people/40926
Or you can search for Firecat Stef.

I don't have much of my profile filled out yet.

There's a box on the side of my stream that says "Invite your friends," so perhaps I have invites to give out. If you want one, tell me the email address you want me to send the invite to. Comments aren't screened on this post but you can send me a Private Message or email me at firecatstef at gmail dot com.

I also have a profile on diasp.org, but I'm completely confused about how that connects to diaspora.org, if at all. https://diasp.org/people/20847 or Firecat Stef. I don't think you need an invite to sign up for diasp.org.

ETA: Based on what [personal profile] eagle said, I deleted my diasp.org account, and if you're there, I guess you can find and follow my diaspora.org account.

[1]Attributed, probably incorrectly, to Alexandre August Ledru-Rollin.

Sure, why not? If you've got any spare invites, anyway. G+ seems to be fizzling, and it'd be interesting to see what else is out there.

My understanding of how they connect is that no one is just, for example, "eagle" in Diaspora. Instead, I'm eagle@joindiaspora.org, where the bit after the @ is a "pod," similar to a domain name for e-mail addresses. All the identities are scoped, and pods exchange information so that you can follow people in other pods as if they were in your own pod. That means that anyone can set up a new pod and link into the network, sort of like setting up a new Usenet server, and each pod can set its own policies, identity verification methods, authentication, and so forth as it chooses.

I don't know if the system as yet supports aliasing so that you can tell the system that two identities in different pods are both you.

On seconds thoughts, don't bother... I managed to set up an account on diasp.org which doesn't require invites. FWIW, when I searched for "firecat stef" it produced two results, one for diasp.org and the other for joindiaspora.org.

I'm not seeing any friends-of-friends stuff there at present. Perhaps the two folk I've found so far (you and someone else) haven't set any up? Or maybe one has to search for names individually, rather than trawling through one's friends' networks for familiar names. *shrug*

OK, this is making me want to create a Diaspora account, even though I have so many other things I should be doing with my time! O_o
