Date: 18 Nov 2002 04:59 pm (UTC)When I was a tyke, my Pop used to entertain us on long car trips by singing, and getting us kids to sing along with him.
To this day I still can't listen to any rendition of The Streets of Laredo; it's very much intertwined with a lot of my good memories of him - I miss him a lot.
Some songs with memories for me
Date: 18 Nov 2002 05:03 pm (UTC)Way back when (1987-88) after
More recently, I have a hard time hearing Nora Jones' "Don't Know Why," (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/norahjones/dontknowwhy.html) since the person who introduced it to me chose not to remain in relationship with me. OTOH, I developed a greater appreciation for Cher's "Believe" (http://www.everythingcher.com/pages/lyrics/believe.htm) as I was recovering from that relationship. It described how I was feeling exactly.

Date: 18 Nov 2002 05:16 pm (UTC)Songs from that era remind me of how nothing stays the same.
Also, anything from Guns and Roses first album, of all things. my best friend and I were 18-19, living together, being crazy and carefree. She was killed in a car accident two years later, at the age of 21. Always makes me think of how much of life she didn't get to experience, but also how she remains eternally young in my memories.

Date: 18 Nov 2002 05:39 pm (UTC)Most of my other heavy-hitting nostalgic songs come from when I was in college, and they tend to put a smile (whether happy or chagrinned) on my face. Several of my friends and I worked for the campus radio station, and we used to play a bizarre form of musical torture, depending on whose turn it was in the barrel, so to speak. The morning after I got really drunk and lost my (consensual) virginity, the radio blared "Tequila Sunrise" by the Eagles, "Only the Good Die Young" by Billy Joel, and "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf all...damned....day. When I hear those songs now, I just giggle. They remind me of a much more innocent, much happier time of my life.

Date: 18 Nov 2002 06:52 pm (UTC)It was my decision to end it. I spent a lot of time revisiting the decision and trying to decide if I could have done it differently.
Lyrics are here.

Date: 18 Nov 2002 07:13 pm (UTC)As that relationship came to its (cataclysmic, inevitable) end, "You Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morrisette was just really making it big, and fit the situation almost perfectly. That one doesn't hurt to hear, though - as befits something as cathartic as that track.

Date: 18 Nov 2002 09:13 pm (UTC)"this must be the place (naive melody)"--the talking heads version. i'd heard it many times and then my ex left and my life went haywire and one day i was making a compilation tape and i played it and it was like "that's it!! that's my life--that's my story!" it's still my "desert island" song but i hope that i'd get a few more. there are a few more that remind me of people but none of them will break my heart anymore.

Date: 18 Nov 2002 10:53 pm (UTC)Somebody, by Depeche Mode - a boy I knew in high school, who graduated and then joined the army, and died of a heart condition in boot camp
Strawberry Wine - waltzing in SF with Joyce - a very strong and powerful memory, one of those where time slowed down and I could take in EVERY aspect of every second of the dance. We went 'round and 'round in a gymnasium somewhere, smelling her cologne, breathing in every bit of her, utterly and completely calm for that moment.
My favorite mistake, by Sheryl Crow - Sonja and the day she almost asked me to be hers forever.
Good Enough, by Sarah McLachlan - my father
Where have all the cowboys gone, by Paula Cole - Pride, 1998, Karen, dancing, unforgetable
The Air that I Breathe, by kd lang - Karen, that night
Plenty, by Sarah McLachlan - the end of my marriage
Hold On, by Sarah McLachlan - Dana
I want you, by Savage Garden - Shay
A lot of Sarah McLachlan songs have associations for me. During a deep depression I sat in a basement and listened to her CD Fumbling Towards Ecstasy over and over rethinking my life. Every song seemed to say something to me at the time, and they still do.
There are others, but I think that's enough. :)

Date: 19 Nov 2002 12:23 am (UTC)Songs like Gentle, Angry, People by Holley Near and Shine My Life Like a Light by the Indigo Girls.
Almost anything by Donovan in his last few years as a performer.
Almost anything by the Moody Blues and the Mommas and Poppas.
A few of the early Rock and Roll songs remind me of great times with my sister or brother. Not so much actual memories but a general feeling of love and companionship.
Many of the songs in musical theater or movie musicals. The sappy stuff that leaves me touched and crying.
All the songs in Rochy Horror Picture Show.
Many of the songs of my childhood like Mares Eat Oats and other kid's songs.

Date: 21 Nov 2002 07:11 pm (UTC)Anyway...great question.
Wait! I just pinned one down!
Right off the top of my head, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper. My best friend from public school and I used to sing it together in 8th(?) grade. She song the top and I sang the harmony.
