Are there any songs that remind you so much of a particular part of your life that you feel like your heart is going to break?

"Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", Billy Joel. My 20s, my best friend Michael. I miss him. I miss him I miss him I miss him. He died 5 years ago at the age of 39. He was a huge part of my life, one of those people you never have to explain yourself to. That hole will never be filled.

Yeah.

When I was a tyke, my Pop used to entertain us on long car trips by singing, and getting us kids to sing along with him.

To this day I still can't listen to any rendition of The Streets of Laredo; it's very much intertwined with a lot of my good memories of him - I miss him a lot.

Some songs with memories for me

Dan Fogelberg's "The Leader of the Band," (http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php?sid=%2C%F1cz%19%13%D8%A9) and "Same Old Lang Syne" (http://kiml3399.tripod.com/fogelberg.htm) remind me a lot of my lover Gary when we first met in 1981, and also has echoes of my first love in high school (he loved Dan Fogelberg as well).

Way back when (1987-88) after [livejournal.com profile] akienm and I broke up the first time, I refused to listen to Jethro Tull's "Songs from the Wood" (http://www.collecting-tull.com/Albums/Lyrics/SongsFromTheWood.html) because it reminded me too much of him.

More recently, I have a hard time hearing Nora Jones' "Don't Know Why," (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/norahjones/dontknowwhy.html) since the person who introduced it to me chose not to remain in relationship with me. OTOH, I developed a greater appreciation for Cher's "Believe" (http://www.everythingcher.com/pages/lyrics/believe.htm) as I was recovering from that relationship. It described how I was feeling exactly.

Always... I'm an extremely nostalgic person, and music sets it off more than anything. Lately, anything that was on the radio in the very early 90's stirs me that way- that's when my ex and I were young kids just starting out, and full of hope- it felt like we had all the time in the world.

Songs from that era remind me of how nothing stays the same.

Also, anything from Guns and Roses first album, of all things. my best friend and I were 18-19, living together, being crazy and carefree. She was killed in a car accident two years later, at the age of 21. Always makes me think of how much of life she didn't get to experience, but also how she remains eternally young in my memories.

"Two Little Girls" --Ani Difranco. The song wasn't out during that period of my life, but it puts my heart in my throat because it describes my relationship with J so well.

Most of my other heavy-hitting nostalgic songs come from when I was in college, and they tend to put a smile (whether happy or chagrinned) on my face. Several of my friends and I worked for the campus radio station, and we used to play a bizarre form of musical torture, depending on whose turn it was in the barrel, so to speak. The morning after I got really drunk and lost my (consensual) virginity, the radio blared "Tequila Sunrise" by the Eagles, "Only the Good Die Young" by Billy Joel, and "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf all...damned....day. When I hear those songs now, I just giggle. They remind me of a much more innocent, much happier time of my life.

i don't know about "about to break", but i've been consciously avoiding listening to matthew sweet for a while now, so as not to risk it.

I heard Bruce Springsteen's "Back In Your Arms" about the time I broke up with my exes. It was my first triad relationship; breaking up wasn't the end of a marriage, but it was the end of an engagement.

It was my decision to end it. I spent a lot of time revisiting the decision and trying to decide if I could have done it differently.

Lyrics are here.

"Another Night" by Real McCoy is almost inextricably linked in my head with the man I cheated on [livejournal.com profile] gridlore with. It's been ages since I heard the song, and I have no idea how I'd react to it now.

As that relationship came to its (cataclysmic, inevitable) end, "You Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morrisette was just really making it big, and fit the situation almost perfectly. That one doesn't hurt to hear, though - as befits something as cathartic as that track.

not break exactly but burst out of my skin:

"this must be the place (naive melody)"--the talking heads version. i'd heard it many times and then my ex left and my life went haywire and one day i was making a compilation tape and i played it and it was like "that's it!! that's my life--that's my story!" it's still my "desert island" song but i hope that i'd get a few more. there are a few more that remind me of people but none of them will break my heart anymore.

Well, I can't hear the songs "Forever Autumn" by Justin Hayward or "Cry over You" by Fiona Joyce without sobbing.

Yes, I always associate songs with certain parts of my life. I have "theme songs" for many important moments of my life, sometimes because I heard the song during that moment, or sometimes because I heard it later and the song brought that moment rolling back through my head. I mostly associate songs with people.

Somebody, by Depeche Mode - a boy I knew in high school, who graduated and then joined the army, and died of a heart condition in boot camp

Strawberry Wine - waltzing in SF with Joyce - a very strong and powerful memory, one of those where time slowed down and I could take in EVERY aspect of every second of the dance. We went 'round and 'round in a gymnasium somewhere, smelling her cologne, breathing in every bit of her, utterly and completely calm for that moment.

My favorite mistake, by Sheryl Crow - Sonja and the day she almost asked me to be hers forever.

Good Enough, by Sarah McLachlan - my father

Where have all the cowboys gone, by Paula Cole - Pride, 1998, Karen, dancing, unforgetable

The Air that I Breathe, by kd lang - Karen, that night

Plenty, by Sarah McLachlan - the end of my marriage

Hold On, by Sarah McLachlan - Dana

I want you, by Savage Garden - Shay

A lot of Sarah McLachlan songs have associations for me. During a deep depression I sat in a basement and listened to her CD Fumbling Towards Ecstasy over and over rethinking my life. Every song seemed to say something to me at the time, and they still do.

There are others, but I think that's enough. :)

Yes. And new ones get added to the list from time to time.

Songs like Gentle, Angry, People by Holley Near and Shine My Life Like a Light by the Indigo Girls.

Almost anything by Donovan in his last few years as a performer.

Almost anything by the Moody Blues and the Mommas and Poppas.

A few of the early Rock and Roll songs remind me of great times with my sister or brother. Not so much actual memories but a general feeling of love and companionship.

Many of the songs in musical theater or movie musicals. The sappy stuff that leaves me touched and crying.

All the songs in Rochy Horror Picture Show.

Many of the songs of my childhood like Mares Eat Oats and other kid's songs.

Take My Breath Away by Berlin because it was a song that was big on the charts about the same time a good friend of mine left for the military and I never saw him again. We had grown up as practically brothers and sisters, and to this day I don't know what happened to him. :(

Also have this dislike for the Moody Blues, also related to the loss of a friend.

No.

I've got some memories that will take me back to that sort of feeling, but none of them are encoded in a song.

When I saw your post, I tried to pin down one particular song that I could share with you but I couldn't. There are so many songs that define different times in my life...music is a huge part of who I am.
Anyway...great question.
Wait! I just pinned one down!
Right off the top of my head, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper. My best friend from public school and I used to sing it together in 8th(?) grade. She song the top and I sang the harmony.
