the mousemen

govern yourself, they said
to the woman, whom
they thought lay squashed
on the platter of their momentary
desire, her
red hair sopping with butter
and cinnamon. but her address
is out of range
of their address. their fervent
attempts (amidst
trips to the buffet for more claret)
to make an example of her
are but gibbers of faint breath,
that briefly cause the candle flame
to gutter.
