kyubi and I went to Osento tonight. I like being able to shower outside in the nude, in the rain, in a large city.

When I got home, I updated my quote file. I had taken out a bunch of quotes after 09/11/01 because they seemed irrelevant at the time. I decided it was time to put them back in, and I also added an accumulation of new quotes. I'm very proud of my quote file. You can view it one random bit at a time here.

I keep seeing Selkie out of the corner of my eye in what turns out on closer inspection to be piles of shoes.

Osento's a women's bath house (massage, small sauna, shared big tubs, big resting area, expressly non-sexual) in an old Victorian house in San Francisco. I think I first went about 20 years ago, went fairly frequently in the 80s, and last went about 10 years ago. It's a pretty neat place.

Osento is a Japanese-style bathhouse for women located in a residential townhouse in San Francisco's Mission District. Inside, they have an entryway where you pay and leave your shoes, a changing room with cots and a small kitchen with lemons to put in your water, a large hot tub, a bathroom and shower, and a massage room. Outdoors they have an outdoor shower, a cold plunge, a steam room, a dry sauna, and a deck up a flight of stairs. It's only visible from the upstairs of the townhouse, which is where the owner lives, so you can sit outside in the nude.

It's a treasure. It's been around since the '70s and it's the kind of place one never would have expected to survive into the new millennium.

Hmm. Sounds lovely. :) There's a similar-but-different place in Humboldt, a hot tub & sauna place combined with a coffee shop, where the hot tubs are outdoors with showers and tall wooden privacy fences, so you can sit in the hot tub in the nude in the rain. Wonderful, and I miss it badly.

I had the same experience after Minnie was gone...except that I kept expecting her to jump up in my lap. I also saw weird shadows.

My aunt had to get rid of a teacosy she had in the shape of a cat, because every time she saw it out of the corner or her eye she'd think it was the cat and start to cry.

Yeah. I have a stuffed animal - an anteater, I think; I collect obscure species - that has Selkie's coloring. It used to sit on my conga drum and I always mistook it for Selkie. It's been put away for a while now, and I'm not going to bring it out any time soon.

Selkie used to jump off her cat condo with a distinctive "thump" and then I would hear her toenails on the wood floor as she went off somewhere. I miss that I don't hear that at the times I expect it, like when I get up in the morning.

May time ease your pain. I still miss my Princess, four years later... but I smile when I see photos of her. Time has smoothed the hard spiky stabbing bits into a bearable soft nugget. If that makes any sense whatsoever.
