Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading COVID-19 expert in the United States, has repeatedly said that heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, and “obesity” make people more at risk for developing a severe case of COVID-19. But only three of these are actual diseases. So-called “obesity” is an arbitrary designation based on the unscientific body mass index (BMI). While Fauci believes he’s helping Americans keep themselves and their loved ones safe, he’s actually dressing medical fatphobia up as medical fact. Likely taking their cue from Fauci, journalists have been writing articles that link “obesity” to COVID-19, prompting Christy Harrison, author of the 2019 book Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating, to call on “news outlets…to STOP reporting that body size is an independent risk factor for COVID-19.”

OH MY GOD, SO MUCH THIS. Every single paper is picking it up now and it sucks.

The horrible GI doc I saw didn't want to hear anything about any of my symptoms after I declined her kind offer of bariatric surgery, and I had to really push for the CT scan that wound up diagnosing not gallstones, which she thought I had, but an aneurysm. It would have gone undetected otherwise! THANKS FATPHOBIC DOC.

Oh no, it's a totally asymptomatic aneurysm. It surprised everybody. The GI doc was all "Well you have no conditions that would match your reported symptoms so you should just do like I told you and eat more fiber and have a nutritional consult" blah blah. So no joy either, plus a surprise! health problem. At least nobody has blamed that one on DETHFAT.

Back when Kaiser docs still routinely had physical folders they used, I had a big note put in mine on the left: "If you bring up bariatric surgery, you are fired from my care."

It never happened again.

I tell my care folks "Don't focus on weight *loss*, but I'm happy to have you encourage me to do better at exercising within my ability to do so."

I've had amazing help with physical therapy and went from not being able to walk a block to being able to walk five miles. Right now, I can do about half a mile, but my back is being a jerk this week.
