I usually love feeling fannish. But it's weird getting super invested and super opinionated about characters in a story, such that when I watch new episodes, I sit there screaming "NO!" at the screen like it’s a sportsball game and my team just did something really stupid with the macguffin.
This comment may or may not have been brought to you today by Lucifer Season 5. (And if you're moved to comment on that specifically, I've watched 7 of the 8 episodes, no spoilers please. I'm finished with all the available episodes, so comment away.)

Date: 22 Aug 2020 06:27 pm (UTC)I think the stakes are heightened fannishly by everything in the outside world being on fire and shitty right now, so there's even more pressure that the things we turn to for escapism and enjoyment make us happy (or that's true for me, anyway -- and I think one reason why I've been rereadng and rewatching closed canon I love all year).

Date: 22 Aug 2020 07:27 pm (UTC)Present day reality reminds me of the famous Tolkien remark about escapism....which I have just learned right now is apparently not an actual Tolkien quote but Le Guin sort of paraphrasing Tolkien, wtf. https://thetolkienist.com/2014/01/03/not-a-tolkien-quote-fantasy-is-escapist-and-that-is-its-glory/

Date: 22 Aug 2020 07:54 pm (UTC)I've never seen that quote, attributed to either Tolkien or Le Guin, and it's exactly what I need right now. Thank you!

Date: 22 Aug 2020 07:58 pm (UTC)It's still a lovely sentiment, even if Tolkien didn't say exactly that.
