I put in some nominations for [community profile] limitedtheatricalrelease, an exchange for small to medium sized film fandoms (<1000 works on AO3). I didn't sign up but someone requested one of my nominations, Devil in a Blue Dress, so I wrote a treat for them. It's the first fic for this film on AO3 as far as I can tell.

I highly recommend both the movie and the book of the same name it's based on.

Oh, I have this on my to-read list (your fic, not the book, which I've read and enjoyed). I like the Easy Rawlins' series a lot. Also, I like the Writing the Other web site, too. It's new to me.

Ooh, I remember really liking at least one of those books.

I feel like I need to take a dialect course for my book. The only character who speaks in dialect is the only white guy who doesn't end up dead by the end and I based his speech patterns off someone I knew, but I am still not positive I got it right.

He's from Newfoundland. I try to be sparing with the dialect, both for the reader's sake and to avoid stereotyping, but I also just really love the way it sounds and I want to convey some of it in text. I ended up basically erring on the side of his accent getting more noticeable when he's angry, which, granted, is a lot of the time. And not writing anything phonetically but trying to convey it through grammatical structure.
