Audiobooks
  • V. E. Schwab, A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1). Narrated by Steven Crossley. I tried this a while back and bailed because it was too sadistic for me at the time. But my tastes have changed so I decided to try it again and I'm really liking it this time. (Overall, it's not turning out as sadistic as I thought it was going to be when I bailed the first time.)
TV/Movies
  • Loki (Disney+). I've watched all the episodes at least twice and now I'm watching bits as needed to write the fic I'm working on.
  • Lucifer (Netflix). I've finished this but I'm rewatching the first season with one friend and just finished rewatching the final season with another. It is interesting to do this, because my initial watch was over a period of years and I didn't have a good sense of how the characters (especially Lucifer) were changing. But watching the first and final seasons at the same time make that a lot more obvious.
  • Squid Game (Netflix). I tried this with my Netflix watch party (NWP) group but we all bounced off it after about twenty minutes and stopped watching. I know it's incredibly popular, so if you like it, you're welcome to try to convince me to keep watching — just please tell me that it's not more of the same down on his luck, unreliable guy being down on his luck and unreliable.
  • MetalShop Masters (Netflix). This is an "eliminate one contestant per week" competition show. The NWP had a lot of issues with the first ep, but we watched the second ep. We had pretty much the same issues with the second ep (the show, including the judging, is sexist, and when it's not sexist, it's arbitrary). Contestants were paired, and in one of the male–female pairs, the man shot down all of the woman's suggestions, so their piece sucked and she was eliminated as a result. I'm giving up.
  • The Great British Baking Show (Netflix). The NWP watched collection 9, episode 1. This collection has Noel Fielding as one of the hosts. He's kind of adorable. This has always been my favorite "eliminate one contestant per week" show because the hosts seem like they're on the contestants' side and the contestants seem to be on each other's side. I enjoyed it.

Now I know I don't need to try the 2nd episode of Metal Shop Masters! Thank you!

By the way, have you ever tried one of the Great British Baking Show remakes from other countries? I have enjoyed the Canadian show, and I think I've heard that the Australian version is fun too.

Oh bloody Metal Shop Masters. I watched the whole thing, and some people in it made cool things in each episode, but the judging remains terrible throughout. TERRIBLE.

I just read an article about Squid Game, so I was interested to read your take on it. I don't have Netflix so I doubt I'll give it a go, but good to know.

I love the GBBO but I like Matt Lucas better than Noel.
