Rian Johnson Reaches for Another Knife (via the New Yorker, which I subscribe to; not sure if it will be accessible to non subscribers)

Of his movies I’ve seen only Looper. But now that I know Knives Out stars Daniel Craig and is a mystery series, I’ll be checking it out.

I opened this because it said he talked about how Agatha Christie was “misunderstood.”

I did enjoy the first Knives Out, perhaps just because of the over-the-top performance by Daniel Craig.

This is a fantastic interview — thanks for sharing! I don't have a New Yorker subscription, but you can generally read a certain number of articles for free each month without the subscription, so the link should work for most people in my situation.

Rian Johnson is one of my favourite Hollywood writer-directors — Knives Out and Brick are particular favourites, and his Star Wars film was far and away my favourite of the recent sequel trilogy, so I'm really looking forward to the new film!

Rian Johnson is great. I should rewatch Looper; I remember not being super impressed by it, but Brick and Brothers Bloom improved enough on rewatch (and Brick was already great; Bloom was 'this is good but Brick was better') that it's worth looking in to.

(The Last Jedi was very much a mixed bag for me: the Luke stuff and pretty much all the character development blew me away, but the whole space-chase annoyed me. Definitely overall preferable to the other two, though!)

Looper felt to me like an interesting failure — ambitious in what it was trying to do, even if it didn't quite manage to be a great film. I don't know if that makes sense.

As for The Last Jedi, I basically agree with your assessment — I enjoyed it for the character development, particularly with Rey, and just in general felt that it was trying to do something interesting and different, rather than lovingly recreating an ode to Star Wars fans' nostalgia.

That was an amazing interview. (I could read it but I have a subscription-blocker-workaround, so I don't know if other people will be able to or not.

I've sent it on to my partner who's a big Agatha Christie fan. (We both loved Knives Out and are excited for Glass Onion.) I expect she'll appreciate it a great deal.

I loved the article. I like Knives Out and I didn't realize he did Brick, too, which is one of my favourite movies. And I liked his thoughts on Agatha Christie, too. Spot-on.
