What She Said, in a big way.

We're getting our new cat tonight. He's a rescued kitty; our friends Beth Friedman and Pat Wrede saved his life. Beth stopped for him after seeing him on the side of the road shortly after being hit by a car; she was meeting up with Pat to go running, I think it was, but the two of them changed plans and got the kitty to the vet and then to the cat hospital for major help. He's got one rear leg in a cast, and he's bruised and banged up, and the stitches in his mouth don't come out for a while yet, but he is the sweetest, sweetest cat. Looks to be about ten months old, was wearing a really nice collar when they found him, but no name and no tags and no chip. Though he was very skinny and not in the greatest of shape, he had obviously had good nutrition and loving humans around him for most of his early life, which we're figuring probably means that he was a well-loved cat who somehow got lost, rather than being an abandoned cat. Since he's still an intact male, we're thinking he probably got away sometime before the point at which neutering would be done.

We feel really, really lucky to be getting him. There will be future medical expenses, and we hope to help pay back some of what various good people have already spent in rescuing him, but we're glad to be in a position where we can do this. Juan asked me if I minded not getting kittens as I had hoped; I said this guy needed a home, and he seemed like a really good cat, and Juan concurs with that estimation. (I trust his cat judgement much more than my own. He is an excellent cat-parent, too, and very good with cats that need ongoing medical care.)

We don't know what his name really is, yet (he'll probably tell us, somehow, pretty quick), but his use-name is Sophocles, because Beth couldn't bear to put "Stray" down on the emergency vet form, and he strongly resembled a short-haired version of my dear Pamela's Aristophanes, who is also a rescued cat of extreme goodness. (He's got a short tail now, but he is alive and endearing and amazingly goofy and in a house full of catly love, i.e. Blaisdell Poly.)

Anyhow, thank you for posting the link to this. I had seen it before, but it's oh-so-timely right now.

And now I have to run do errands and then get the room ready for the new cat. Cat! Yay! I do hope Roshi Malt and he will like each other; Malt has been lonesome for feline companionship, and I think they'll work well together, but all good wishes people can send will be much appreciated.
