I once took an aptitude test and it told me "spy". I was a bit miffed. The second time I took it it said nothing at all was suitable, and the third time it said "astronaut". Yeesh! I gave up on the whole aptitude concept and went with computer programming.

Date: 19 Sep 2003 10:39 am (UTC)(I have the same reaction when I've gotten "artist" as a career choice. I mean, I'm OK at some artistic pursuits, but these career things never seem to measure motivation, which I haven't enough of to make a living at being an artist. At least so far.)
I think I have given up on the notion of "career." The only work that I think I'd be happy doing full-time is working with animals, but I'm not physically able to do it full-time. I keep noodling on stuff like zoologist, animal behaviorist, dog-trainer, etc., though.
As for other things, I'm open to making money doing them, but I don't want to get locked into doing them full-time, the way a career would require. (Mostly I make money via editing, which is part of the reason I wound up with so many kinds of knowledge - by carefully reading books on all those things.)

Date: 19 Sep 2003 10:43 am (UTC)I think most of us (editors, I mean) are information junkies. Editing per se has never bored me, because I am always learning something. Some manuscripts have certainly been dull, but the job never is.
