Article on proposals for weight loss surgery reform from the DesMoinesRegister.com. (Emphasis mine.)

Dr. Kyle Ver Steeg of Fort Dodge agreed with Smolik that the proctoring recommendations are impractical. Ver Steeg said he'd done other kinds of operations for 25 years, and he didn't find it necessary to have another surgeon watch his initial gastric-bypass procedures. When he decided to start performing the surgery two years ago, he took a course in it, then watched other doctors at prestigious hospitals perform it several times. To perfect his laparoscopic techniques, he said, he operated on a banana peel placed inside a box. "I practiced and practiced and practiced until I had it down," he said.

Fucking freaky. I am *so glad* my (older) sister decided not to have the operation. I didn't talk her head off, 'cause she is likely to do exactly the opposite of what I suggest. But apparently my concern was obvious without me saying a word when she told me about it, and she did more research and decided not to take the risk. Phew.
