Like Wells, he was as much a philosopher as an sf writer. He was actually pretty interesting, being a confirmed pacifist who worked in the Friends Ambulance Service during World War I. Last and First Men and Star Maker are his most well-known works, I guess, but I have a soft spot for Odd John.
Oh, but it's such a good choice for you in some ways. He was more of a thinker than a writer, very philosophical and abstract (I didn't know the biographical data that pameladean gave above; it makes his philosophy more interesting.) His work is dense, and perhaps somewhat dated, but worth attention.
