Howl's Moving Castle

I saw it with kyubi. The Shattuck in Berkeley is showing it in one theater in Japanese with English subtitles and in another theater with captions dubbed in English. We saw it with subtitles.



I love Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli movies for their imagery and their emotional breadth, and this didn't disappoint. I also love them for their strong plots with pro-environmental (for lack of a better description) elements. In this case, however, I thought the plot was a little muddled and many of the characters' motivations unclear. But that didn't bother me very much; I'd happily watch it a few dozen times more just for the nifty imagery.



They showed a preview for Neil Gaiman's and David McKean's MirrorMask. Sheesh, that looks weird. I love Neil Gaiman and can only tolerate David McKean in pretty small doses, but I'll probably go see it anyway.

We saw that on Tuesday, and I was in a state of "oh man, I've been seeing previews of this online for years -- why during all that time did I not get around to reading the book before seeing the movie?" Especially as my son Sam and a friend of his who came along are fans of the book (the friend used to have a cat named Calcifer).

No MirrorMask preview, though, unfortunately ...

I'm glad I didn't read the book first; I'm told it's not all that faithful to the book and if I'd read the book first I probably would have been going "Hey! That's not in the book!" throughout the movie.

I concur. However, if you really want a better in-depth story of the characters and their motivation, read the book by Diana Wynne Jones. It has become one of my favorite books. - The book is different than the movie as some of the characters were combined.

I got the scriptbook last week. Just on the few pics that are in there, I will definitely go see it. I am pretty sure I'll be drawing off those visuals for a while too.

I think it was Mr Gaiman had a blogpost a while ago about how everything gets pulled into the big stewpot of his head (altho that isn't a new thought) and it just strikes me as cool that that is sort of an endless effect. Into his head and morphed into soemthing different and then his viewers and on and on..

Jay..um..acquired the movie a while back. We watched in the consuite at Anizona but I was really too busy to pay close attention. We managed to get to the sneak preview a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed it! We got the dubbed version. I think I'd like to see the subbed version though.

We will get it when it comes out on DVD.

I just sort of randomly followed you over here from jmbt_intp and after admiring your icon, chuckling at your user info, and oohing over your interest list, the first post I see is about the new Miyzaki movie! It's a sign. You must be an interesting person. Anyway, I thought I'd add you, if you don't object. Because I need more interesting people to read about.

And of course, I missed it while it was showing here, ("Howl's Moving Castle", that is) and it's already been replaced by "March of the Penguins" which isn't a bad thing, but couldn't they have waited a week? Damn movie theater :D
