firecat: smiling cat (cool)

If you are interested in film and haven't seen the "restored authorized edition" of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, released by Kino Video in 2003, I recommend it highly. Not only is it the most complete version of the film available, restoring the original storyline, but it also comes with the original musical score written for the film. Oh, and you can actually SEE the film. (The only versions I've seen previous to this have been all smudgy and dirty.) The DVD also comes with a good documentary - "The Metropolis Case" - which puts the film in context in art history and film history, and also describes how the special effects were done.

I watched it with the OH and we kept stopping the film to discuss other films (including King Kong) that had paid tribute to this or that set or scene.

Added to my Netflix queue. Thank you! I love Metropolis. I think I've seen this version, but not with the original score (because most of my recent viewings have been at shows where the Alloy Orchestra performs their own score live (which is fabulous). When they started doing this they used the film that had been put together for the "pop/rock" score version that came out some time in the 80's, but more recent shows used the film you mention).
