Exactly. I didn't like the way he handled some of the animals he presented (I kept thinking "If I were that animal, I would be pretty upset"). But at least he didn't permanently harm them.

Apparently this subtle point was lost on some of his fans, or something.

Good grief, were these so-called fans not paying attention? Whenever Steve Irwin got injured by one of the animals he was showing to the cameras, he was always very clear that it was not the animal's fault.
