Up until today I've allowed commenting in my journal from everyone and have not turned on IP logging or screened comments. Today I've received two comment spams from two different registered users. I banned the users and reported the comments as spam. To prevent more comment spam I will be turning on comment screening for people not already on my friends list and IP logging for all comments. I'll probably turn it off again in a little while in the hope that this is a one-time problem.

What a fucking bore.

ETA: Screening appears not to be working in this journal, although it's working in my free account. I've put in a request to LJ support, but if anyone else has had this problem, help would be welcome.

Comment-spam accounts appear to be on the rise. Anti-egalitarian though it may be, it makes me miss the days when you needed an invite to get an LJ account ...

I just got one of those comment spams too. The user *looks* like a real user; I wonder if there's LJ-jacking or spoofing going on.

Gee, you wouldn't suppose this could be connected to LJ's new policy on ads, would you?

I'd call it coincidence. I last got comment spam (from, yes, a registered user ... who had set up zir journal two days before, evidently for that very purpose) a couple of weeks before the commerce policy was unveiled.

I got two comment-spams Friday, from registered users. One active, one abandoned. This was before the sponsored-communities announcement, and I have not taken part in that discussion, so I don't think there's any connection. I benned those two users, because I assume the accounts are compromised, and I haven't gotten any since.

I admit I haven't dealt with comment spammers, since my journal is friends locked for the most part.

It's also screened comments which I didn't do on purpose, I was messing around with differnt styles and when I was done comments where screened. I've left it that way.

It wouldn't surprize me to find out more people start going friends locked because of the spammer accounts.

I got three of them yesterday. At least one of them definitely had his account hacked, so don't automatically blame the journal owners -- it might not be them. I turned on both screening (for people not on my flist) and IP logging. Haven't gotten any since. I also changed my password to something a little harder to hack, just in case.

I bet there were a LOT of spam reports yesterday, because I reported all three of mine, and judging from the comments to the most recent post in one of the hacked journals, a lot of others did too.
