favorite hotels in/near Monterey, Calif.?

I'm thinking about going to Monterey in August to visit the Monterey County Fair and Wool Show and the aquarium. I'm having trouble deciding where to stay. Do you have a favorite hotel there? My budget is up to $250 per night but I'd rather pay less if I can find someplace decent for less. I don't care about being within "walking distance" of anything because my "walking distance" is only a couple of blocks, and I know I can park in a city lot to visit the aquarium. I prefer hotels to b&bs.

I *so* love Monterey, but haven't been there in about 10 years, so whatever info I could offer would undoubtedly be ancient history. And I don't think I've stayed in a hotel in Monterey, either. Stayed in some Y or something further out on the coast (west/south) that was very nice, but probably not what you're looking for. I've been to several restaurants (can't remember their names after all this time, and they've probably all changed) - the food was to die for. And of course, the aquarium is magnificent.

It's been a while, but I've been to conferences there and stayed in both the Marriott and the Doubletree. Both were fine.

Last month I stayed at the Marina Dunes Resort, which was lovely - quiet and beautiful. It's a hotel alongside the state beach at Marina, with a view across the bay to Monterey. I remember the drive to Monterey as being about 10 minutes, and according to their website rooms start at $99.

The Motel 6 in Seaside is clean and nice. If there is not a Monterey event going on, it's fairly cheap.

Martine Inn is a B&B, but it's a beautifully restored victorian, with very nice rooms. Light and airy. A high level of service, but very unassuming about it.

Monterey Bay Lodge was also very very nice. They claim to be upscale (and they are) but can't hide that they are very renovated motel.

we stayed at... oh crap. i don't remember the name of it, but were really about 4 blocks from the aquarium. the price was "reasonable" and the room, was small but ok. we also went down without reservations on memorial day weekend.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the aquarium. one of my favorite places on earth.

There are lots of (relatively) cheap motels in Monterey along Munras Ave. north of Highway 1. When my mother was ill in her last years, wild_irises and I would routinely stay at the Padre Oaks, 1278 Munras, (831) 373-3741. Nothing fancy, but with clean and comfortable rooms, run by nice people.

I've only been once, in 1999. My employer messed up my reservation; I spent most of the time at one of the conference hotels, which was big and impersonal and bog standard and expensive, but I spent the first night here (http://www.montereyhotel.com/index.html), I think, and it was very nice.
