For various reasons (details on request) I've decided not to renew my Nature Conservancy membership. What conservation / environmental organization should I give money to instead? (Please explain your recommendation(s).)
Heifer Project International (http://www.heifer.org/). Because they work on micro-scales, which is often overlooked, and because they're working towards charity that sustains it's self.
Pardon for my intrusion - you don't know me (here via dbubley, via loracs)
I used to work at TNC. Kudos for your decision not to renew. Reasons are myriad. Steve McCorm*ck is a heckuva nice guy, but that's not enough, and there are real problems with their operational practices.
Personally, I do donate to heifer. However, if you object to explicit christian charities, they might not be for you.
Among environmental agencies. studies show that WWC donates a higher percentage of their donations directly into conservation efforts than any of the others in that "field". If you're looking specifically into land conservation, then you might check out TPL (Trust for Public Land) or one of the regional land trust organizations (e.g. Peninsula Land Trust).
Heh. I checked your user info, and you *do* know me, from various fat/dyke lists around town, and I've contributed to your healthcare provider lists. So its not as creepy an anonymous comment as it coulda been, and I've friended you....
Friended back! And your dropping by not at all creepy...the only reason I screen comments from non-LJfriends is that I was getting loads of comment spam for a while.
I like the suggestions above; I'd also look into something small-scale and/or local, like a local wetlands project (I know there are some around the Bay.)
