I just got back from a vacation in which we went to 5 baseball games in 5 days and I knit at every one. A couple of people joshingly said things like "I guess you don't want to pay attention to the game!" but I didn't care. At one field I did actually feel I should put down my knitting because of the possibility of being hit by foul balls, and I did.

At the last game I measured the back of my sweater and found that I'd gone an inch past when I should have been shaping the armholes. Oh well.

I went to Stitch'n'Pitch night and found it quite easy to pay attention to the game and still get some knitting done. They have such long breaks between innings for commercials, if nothing else.

I have that problem of getting distracted and going past where I should be doing some shaping, too.

Thanks for the links. I attended a brown bag session related to my job over the lunch hour last fall, and I knitted during it. (Other people were eating, which was far noisier and more distracting, IMNSHO.) Several people (allegedly) went to my boss to complain that it looked like I wasn't paying attention and that it "didn't look good". Of course, she wouldn't tell me who they are but I can guess. I'm sure they were women, and I'm sure they were talking about it during the session since gossiping during presentations about what they don't like about others is typical behavior for them.

I find myself wondering if the negative reactions some people seem to have to public knitting would be as negative if the people knitting were men. Can't quite see them taking on Rosey Grier, the football player who was an avid needlepointer as well as one of the men who tackled Sirhan Sirhan after he shot RFK, in quite the same way.

If I don't have something for my hands to do during lectures, I just zone out. I usually crochet, but my friends are all used to it. I don't think I've seen anybody upset before. I do some kind of handwork at bookgroup, too. It keeps me focused on the book.
